Dec. 23, 2014 Philadelphia, Pa. - The Sports Network announced its 2014 All-American Team on Monday, Dec. 22, and three Villanova Wildcats were honored. Junior quarterback John Robertson (Paramus, N.J.) and junior linebacker Don Cherry (Trumbull, Conn.) were first team honorees, while senior offensive tackle Vince Kowalski (Williamstown, N.J.) was a third team selection.
Robertson finished the 2014 season by completing 197-of-301 (65.4%) with 35 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also had 227 carries for 1,078 yards and 11 scores. Robertson joins Brian Westbrook (1997-2001) as the only two Villanova players to have three 1,000 yard rushing seasons. In seven of his 13 games this year, he threw at least three touchdown passes.
During his Main Line career, Robertson has led Villanova to a 25-10 record as the starting quarterback by completing 518-of-801 (64.6%) with 62 touchdowns and 17 interceptions to go with 633 carries for 3,504 yards (5.5 avg.) and 45 touchdowns. In a second round playoff win over Liberty on Dec. 6, he became Villanova's all-time total offense leader with 10,273 yards.
Cherry started all 14 games this season and registered 134 total tackles (82 solo), 21.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, five forced fumbles, one interception and a fumble recovery. He tallied double figures in tackles in seven of the 14 games, including a career-high tying 16 tackles in the quarterfinal loss to Sam Houston State.
A first team All-CAA honoree, Cherry was also named a second team Capital One Academic All-American. Cherry becomes the first Villanova Wildcat in four years to register at least 100 tackles in a single season. His 134 tackles ranks as the 10th best single season effort in program history.
Kowalski has been a mainstay along the Wildcat offensive line throughout his four-year Villanova career. He started all 48 games of his collegiate career and was a two-time All-CAA performer. This past year, Kowalski helped Villanova lead the CAA and rank ninth nationally in rushing at 242.9 rushing yards per game.
