Head Coach Jay Wright
Opening Statement
"We had a good effort today and we played well. Our defense was outstanding and I know the numbers do not show it but they are a very good rebounding team. The first half we did a good job on the defensive glass because they can get a lot of buckets off their offensive rebounding. It came down to we had a lot of old guys and they had a lot of new guys."
On Villanova's level of play against a Big Five School
"Effort is more of a concern than numbers. Definitely effort. Big Five games you never address numbers, in Big Five games especially... We play for other reasons and that is what I was proud of. Even the guys who got in at the end, our walk-ons, I was really proud of how they played and their defense. We play for each other and I thought our guys did a really good job of that. "
On St. Joseph's Play
"I thought, they have a lot of young guys and their big guys are a significant part of their team. Miles had three in the first half and they do not have the experience to lose him in the first half. He is also one of their best perimeter shooters so that was a big impact. I think it would have been a different game with him in it. "
On Hart
"We know there will be a time when we will need Josh (Hart) to put up big numbers. He could average 20 right now but on this team we don't need that right now. He is one of our best defensive players, definitely out best energy guy and is an outstanding player. In years to come we will see that there is a lot more there to Josh Hart. "
On how the team performed against a rival
"I think that speaks to our maturity and out leadership. We have two seniors and three juniors and not a lot of college teams have that. And I think that says so much of our maturity. Maturity impacts rival games more than anything. When you are young you get excited."
On his bench players
"I want to get them more minutes, these two (Hart and Jenkins) would play a lot more minutes somewhere else but they are developing because they like being on a winning team."
On team experience and how it will effect long-term goals this season
"Our greatest assets is our depth. I wouldn't say we have one guy who carries the team instead we have eight who could carry it any day."
On Jenkins
"Jenkins is improving every day and he is going to get better every day. He can do a lot, and he has so much more left to improve on. He is a good rebounder and a smart defensive player."
Josh Hart, sophomore guard, 12 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal
"Coach stresses catch and shoot, so when my teammates find me and I am open I trust that when they find me I can take the shot. I feel comfortable when I am open or when they find me in transition, I credit my teammates for getting me the ball."
Kris Jenkins, sophomore forward, 8 points, 4 steals, 2 rebounds
"Everybody wants to do whatever it takes to win. We will all do whatever it takes to be successful."
Head Coach Phil Martelli of Saint Joseph's
Opening Statement
"I think the fascination in the way that they play and how they spread the minutes around... What they do has been so well drilled it is a pleasure to watch. Not easy to coach against but a pleasure to watch. I am in awe in how they are playing the game and how unselfish they play the game. I salute Nova, the atmosphere is great and I totally get it. It could have been a mismatch but their fans were very supportive and it was straight up and I appreciate that. Because I am a big believer in Philadelphia basketball. It is a numbers game it isn't analytics. If you turn the ball over 20 times and shot from the free throw line you have to get back in the gym and work to get ready for the Tuesday game. "
On Isaiah Miles fouling out early
"No impact at all. When you are in the fray you play the guys that are there. It isn't a knock on him he played wonderful on Wednesday but today he didn't have it."
On team depth
"We don't have any depth in the front court. It is the experience, they don't have any of it. They reacted better today than they did against Gonzaga but the numbers are on us so we can play well next week. I don't think its depth. It is more of an experience issue. "
