VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team (7-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) fell to conference rival No. 19 Louisville (10-3, 4-0), 16-9, in the Wildcats' home finale Sunday afternoon.
Senior attack Caroline Guidera opened the scoring with a free position shot at 28:03. Louisville tallied three consecutive goals in two-and-a-half minutes to take a 3-1 lead before a Kelsey Denihan free position and an Ali Judge goal tied the game.
The Cardinals offense held onto possession of the ball, which resulted in three more Louisville goals.
Sophomore attack Meghan Breen scored at 4:22, and the Wildcats continued pushing in the waning minutes of the half, but were unable to capitalize as they went into halftime down 6-4.
Louisville attacked in the first 10 minutes of the second half, winning draw controls, maintaining possession and scoring five unanswered goals. Denihan tallied her second of the game at 18:31 to stop the onslaught of Cardinal goals.
Judge scored her second at 15:11 for her 10th goal of the year. Sophomore midfielder Shannon Galvin added a free position goal at 8:58 as Louisville still led, 14-7. Sophomore attack Kendall Cietek added a goal at 8:32.
After two more Cardinal goals, senior attack Katie Collopy recorded her first goal of the season with 24 seconds remaining, but Louisville took the 16-9 win.
Senior Julia Todd and sophomore Jaclyn Fraum split time in goal, with Todd making five saves and allowing four goals while Fraum made six saves and allowed 12 goals.
The Cardinals outshot Villanova, 35-19, and took an 18-8 advantage in draw controls.
Louisville's Nikki Boltja notched six goals and four assists in the game, including her conference-leading 52nd goal.
