June 14, 2014

Recap | Quotes

  • Attendance at Hayward Field for Friday's action was 10,104 and the three-day total for the NCAA Championships is 29,172.
  • Patrick Tiernan was a first team All-American indoors in the 5000 meters with a seventh place finish and improved by one spot to finish in sixth place in Friday's outdoor national championship race. Tiernan was also an All-American during cross country season when he posted a top-10 finish at the national championships.
  • Tiernan's sixth place finish marks the fifth time in school history that a Villanova runner tallied a top-eight finish in the 5000 meters at the outdoor NCAA Championships. Just three other Wildcats had recorded such a finish, including national champions Sydney Maree (1979) and Bobby Curtis (2008).
  • Villanova Top 8 Finishes in NCAA Outdoor 5000 Meters
    1972 - John Hartnett (3rd, 13:43.4)
    1979 - Sydney Maree (1st, 13:20.63)
    2007 - Bobby Curtis (2nd, 13:39.88)
    2008 - Bobby Curtis (1st, 13:33.93)
    2014 - Patrick Tiernan (6th, 13:31.25)

  • Tiernan's personal best time of 13:31.25 eclipsed his previous personal best by more than 6.5 seconds. He had registered a time of 13:37.73 indoors at the Iowa State Classic to set an indoor Villanova record.
  • Sydney Maree holds the outdoor Villanova record in the 5000 meters with his time of 13:20.63. Aside from Maree, it is believed that no other runners in school history have run a 5000 meters time during collegiate competition faster than Tiernan's time of 13:31.25 from Friday's race.
  • Tiernan's time of 13:31.25 ranks 12th in meet history at the outdoor NCAA Championships. Maree previously held the fastest time in the history of the meet (13:20.63), while Bobby Curtis previously ranked 10th with his time of 13:33.93 in 2008. The top two finishers in Friday's race, Lawi Lalang of Arizona (13:18.36) and Edward Cheserek of Oregon (13:18.71), each surpassed Maree's previous meet record. The top four finishers in Friday's race all rank in the newly formed list of top 10 times at the NCAA meet.
