Tiernan, Basili and Warnick Lead Wildcats at Main Line Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Sophomore Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia), senior Brian Basili (South Orange, N.J.) and sophomore Harry Warnick (Fairfield, Conn.) each placed in the top five to lead Villanova at the Main Line Invitational on Thursday evening. Tiernan led the way for the Wildcats with a second place finish out of 119 runners on the four-mile course at Haverford College. Villanova had 13 of its runners in competition at the early-season meet and came away with a successful day overall.

There was no team scoring in the meet, which featured runners from seven local teams. Tiernan crossed the finish line with a time of 19:32.00, while Basili was fourth overall (19:34.70) and Warnick fifth (19:40.00) to lead the Wildcats lineup. The fourth and fifth runners for Villanova were sophomore Kevin Corbusier (Monkton, Md.) and senior Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.), who came in 12th (19:49.20) and 17th (20:02.10), respectively.

The bulk of the season kicks into gear for the Wildcats next month and the local meet at Haverford is an opportunity for the team to gauge the results of its training before the first scored meets of the year. The first scored meet comes up next weekend when Villanova competes in the Washington Invitational.

Junior Robert Hurlbut (Rochester, N.Y.) and senior Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) came in 19th (20:05.90) and 24th (20:22.70), respectively, to round out the top seven Wildcats finishers. The rest of the Villanova lineup included junior Tom Trainer (Havertown, Pa.) in 36th place (20:36.30), while senior Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) was 39th (20:42.50), redshirt freshman Drake Johnston (Santa Monica, Calif.) came in 43rd (20:44.40), redshirt freshman Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) placed 70th (21:20.30), sophomore Kieran Brennan (Pearl River, N.Y.) finished in 74th (21:28.10) and sophomore Josh Lampron (Mansfield, Mass.) placed 86th (21:28.10).

Ryan Mahalsky of Lehigh won the individual title in the race with a time of 19:25.20. Tiernan, Thomas Awad of Penn (19:32.50), Basili and Warnick completed the top five.
