Men vs. USMMA Results
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova men's swimming team (1-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday afternoon from the Villanova Swim Complex by the final of 151-111.
The men captured eight first-place victories, six second-place marks and 11 third-place finishes in the squad's first dual win of the season. The men swept the 200 freestyle event behind senior Jason Moyer (1:45.18, Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), junior Murphy Smith (1:47.00, Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and freshman John Paul Naughton (1:49.68, San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep).
The Wildcat men took first in the 200 medley relay with the quartet of sophomore Mike Rodriguez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), freshman Tyler Nussbaum (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Chaminade), freshman Jake Hoin (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and senior Chris Tamanini (Kingston Twp., Pa./Dallas) with a final time of 1:36.18. The group of John Paul Naughton, senior Tony Sipala (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), freshman Logan Ziegler (Mechanicsville, Va./Maggie L. Walker) and junior Ryan Murtha (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College High School) came in third during the relay at 1:40.50.
Jason Moyer took the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events, winning them with times of 21.80, 47.78 and 1:45.18.
Sophomore Greg Cino (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro) had two individual victories in the 500 and 1000 freestyle races. The sophomore swam a 4:50.67 in the 500 and a 10:01.23 in the 1000.
Jake Hoin finished atop the 100 butterfly with a winning time of 53.49. The freshman also took third in the 100 freestyle at 48.98.
Junior Nikolai Tchobanov (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster High School) also grabbed an individual win in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall at 2:01.57 for the victory.
Mike Rodriguez earned two second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 52.35 and 2:04.71.
Tyler Nussbaum also finished second twice in the 100 breaststroke at 1:00.61 and 200 IM at 2:04.07. The first-year Wildcat also took third in the 200 breast at 2:14.87.
Tony Sipala took second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:13.07. He also finished third in the 100 breast at 1:01.98.
The men will now prepare for a BIG EAST Conference dual with Providence in Providence, R.I. on Sat., Jan. 17 at noon ET.
