VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's (4-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) and men's (0-6, 0-2 BIG EAST) swimming teams open the 2015 dual slate this weekend at home in the Villanova Swim Complex as the two squads face North Carolina State on Sat., Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. The men will then race the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Sun., Jan. 11 at noon. Each meet will follow a 16-event format with no diving competitions occurring.
This weekend will mark Villanova's first time in the pool for competition since a select few Wildcat women raced at the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C. in early December. The men last faced competition from Nov. 20-22 at the Hokie Fall Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech in Christiansburg, Va.
In the fall, the women earned all five BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week awards for which they were eligible (excluding weeks where Villanova did not race). Sophomore Emily Mayo (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) earned the most recent two on Nov. 26 and Dec. 9 while senior Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler) and junior Fiona Hardie (Hampshire, England/Bournemouth School) won on Nov. 11 and Nov. 4, respectively. Freshman Gabby Daigneault (Montreal, Quebec/William H. Hall) earned the first 2014-15 conference award for `Nova on Oct. 28.
The women are 4-3 on the campaign with wins over La Salle, West Virginia, Georgetown and Seton Hall and also had a fourth-place finish of seven teams at the Hokie Fall Invitational.
The men are still looking for its first victory on the season having faced top-ranked opponents like Penn State, Virginia Tech and Alabama. The NC State Wolfpack men's squad is currently ranked No. 17, as of Dec. 11, 2014.
