Oct. 25, 2015

Recap | Box Score | Photo Gallery

  • Villanova lost despite having possession of the ball for nearly 36 minutes (35:56) and running 84 total offensive plays compared to 47 plays run by Towson. The number of plays was the highest for the Wildcats since the 2014 season opener at Syracuse, when Villanova ran 87 plays in a double-overtime affair. The last time the Wildcats had more total plays in a regulation game was on October 13, 2012 (85 plays at Old Dominion).
  • In the last two games, Villanova has had exactly 71 minutes of possession time (35:56 at Towson and 35:04 at Albany). Prior to these two games, the Wildcats had combined for just 69:43 of possession time in their previous three games.
  • Sophomore running back Matt Gudzak established new career highs with 17 carries and 96 rushing yards while also scoring the third rushing touchdown of his career. Gudzak's previous single-game high of 66 rushing yards came in his collegiate debut against Fordham last season on September 6, 2014. Of those 66 yards, 61 yards came on a long touchdown run during a 50-6 Villanova victory.
  • The Wildcats have had 421 yards of total offense in each of their last two games. During the season's first five games, Villanova averaged only 329.8 yards of total offense per contest. The offense in the past two games at Albany and Towson has been very-well balanced, with 445 rushing yards and 397 passing yards.
  • Seven different receivers caught at least one pass for the Wildcats in tonight's game, and all seven tallied at least 20 receiving yards. Senior running back Gary Underwood led the group with six catches for 55 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.
  • Junior linebacker Corey Majors had a career-high 11 total tackles, surpassing his previous personal best of eight tackles against William & Mary earlier this season (October 10, 2015). Majors and junior linebacker Austin Calitro each posted double figures in tackles. Calitro finished the game with 10 total stops and reached double digits for the third time this season. The game marked the second time this season that two Villanova players had double figures in tackles. In the game against Penn on September 24, Calitro had a career-high 13 tackles and Don Cherry made 11 stops.
  • The deciding factor in the game was a pair of pick-sixes by the Towson defense. Chris Tedder had a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown in the opening minute of the third quarter, while Romell Haley returned a touchdown 86 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter. The last time the Wildcats allowed two pick-sixes in a game was at home against William & Mary on October 29, 2005. Villanova won that game, 35-21.
