Villanova/Rhode Island Post-Game Notes

  • Villanova held its opponent without a touchdown for the third time in the last four games. The stretch includes a 37-0 win at Albany on October 17 and a 13-3 win at home against Maine on October 31 prior to the 24-3 win over Rhode Island. The only other game in the four-game stretch was a 28-21 loss to Towson. In that contest, the Tigers scored two of their four touchdowns on pick-sixes. In all, the Wildcats defense has allowed just 20 total points in the last 16 quarters of play.
  • Villanova held the Rams to just 208 yards of total offense, including only 87 rushing yards on 29 attempts. This is the fifth time in nine games on the season that the Wildcats allowed their opponent fewer than 300 total yards. In three other games, the defense gave up no more than 339 yards. Villanova is now holding the opposition to an average of just 292.9 yards per contest.
  • For the second time this season, the Wildcats defense had four interceptions. Senior safety Cameron McCurry, junior linebacker Corey Majors, sophomore linebacker Ed Shockley and junior cornerback Jason Ceneus all had interceptions in the game. Villanova also had four interceptions in the win over Albany on October 17.
  • With the win, the Wildcats improved to 18-3 (.857) all-time against Rhode Island, including 7-2 in games at Meade Stadium. Villanova has won the past four meetings in the series by an average of 27.5 points per game.
  • Sophomore running back Matt Gudzak tallied his first career 100-yard rushing game and finished the day with 118 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. More than half of Gudzak's yards came on three consecutive runs in a span of 47 seconds. He opened a Wildcats drive in the third quarter with a 23-yard run, then ran for a 28-yard run on the next play followed by a 14-yard touchdown run. He gained all of the Villanova yards on a three-play, 65-yard drive which extended the Wildcats lead to 14-3 with 11:09 left in the third quarter.
  • Redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Bednarczyk had a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown for the second straight game. Bednarczyk was 11-of-18 passing for 116 yards and also ran 11 times for 74 yards and a score. He opened the scoring in the game with a four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and also threw a seven-yard pass for a touchdown to senior wide receiver Kevin Gulyas in the fourth quarter.
  • Led by 118 rushing yards from sophomore running back Matt Gudzak and 74 yards from redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Bednarczyk, Villanova tallied a season-high 284 rushing yards in the game. Also productive for the Wildcats were freshman running back Aaron Forbes (seven carries, 39 yards) and freshman wide receiver Jarrett McClenton (two carries, 30 yards).
  • Senior wide receiver Kevin Gulyas had three catches for 28 yards and a touchdown in the game. He moved into the top 20 in Villanova history with 1,385 career receiving yards, passing Phil Atkinson (2005-08) for 20th place. Gulyas needs another 40 yards to tie Greg Downs (1986-90) for 19th place on the program's all-time list.
