BERKELEY, Calif. - The Villanova Wildcats were defeated in the championship game the Cal Classic Sunday evening as they fell to the St. Mary's Gaels 67-60. Villanova now sits at 5-3 on the year.
The Gaels took an early 4-1 lead before a Katherine Coyer three-pointer knotted the game at 4-4. Megan Quinn would hit a three-pointer of her own at the 5:57 mark to give Villanova a 7-4 lead.
A layup by St. Mary's Lauren Nicholson at 4:23 of the first quarter cut the Villanova lead to 9-8. Sydney Raggio's jumper at 3:47 gave the Gaels a 10-9 lead. St. Mary's would close out the quarter on a 12-3 run to give the Gaels an 18-12 lead.
Villanova would go on a run of their own as they opened up the second quarter with 10-0 run to take a 22-18 lead. Two three-pointers from Alex Louin sparked the Wildcat run. Quinn's three-pointer extended the Wildcat lead to 25-18 with 2:20 remaining in the second quarter.
Villanova would take a 28-24 lead into half. The Wildcats held the Gaels to just six points in the second quarter.
The beginning of the third quarter saw Villanova go on a 10-4 run to extend their lead 38-28 with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter. Jordan Dillard's converted an old fashioned three-point play to give the Wildcats a 38-28 lead.
St, Mary's would close out the second quarter on an 8-3 run to cut the Villanova lead to 46-43 after three quarters.
In the fourth, both teams traded baskets back-and-forth early until St. Mary's went on a 15-4 run for six plus minutes of the quarter to give the Gaels the lead. St. Mary's would hit their fouls shots down the stretch to seal the victory. The Gaels outscored Villanova 24-14 in the fourth quarter.
In the loss, Caroline Coyer tallied a team-high 13 points, five rebounds, and one assist. Katherine Coyer and Megan Quinn each had 11 points in the game. Both Katherine Coyer and Megan Quinn were named to the all-tournament teams.
St. Mary's was paced by Lauren Nicholson who finished with 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting. She was named MVP of the Cal Classic.
For the game, Villanova was 21-of-74 from the field (28.4%), 9-of-46 from three-point range (19.6%) and 9-of-11 from the foul line (81.8%), while the Gaels shot 47.1 percent from the floor (24-of-51) and 70.4 percent from the free throw line (19-of-27). St. Mary's owned a 47-39 advantage on the backboards.
The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, December 13th as they travel to Washington D.C. to square off against the George Washington Colonials. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
