Final Stats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova saw their five game win streak come to an end with an 11-2 loss to No. 8 Maryland on Saturday afternoon. The Terps took control of the game early and didn't look back as their strong defensive effort held the Wildcats to just two goals.

With the loss, Villanova falls to 5-2 on the season while Maryland improves to 5-1. The Terps also moved to 9-0 all-time against Villanova in series history. It was the second loss to a ranked opponent this season for the Wildcats; the other being against Johns Hopkins on Feb. 14th in the season opener, 13-10.

Maryland got off to a quick start and went up 2-0 on Villanova before freshman Sean Cerrone (Huntington, N.Y.) registered the first Wildcat goal of the day at the 11:58 mark to cut the UMD lead to 2-1. Following Cerrone's score, Maryland recorded six-straight goals from the 11:01 mark in the first quarter to the 8:56 tick in the second stanza.

Heading into halftime, Maryland held an 8-1 advantage over the hosts via scores from Henry West, Bryan Cole, Colin Heacock, Jay Carlson, Matt Rambo and Dylan Maltz.

Following intermission, junior Eric Gartner (Malvern, Pa.) broke a 28 minute scoring drought for Villanova less than two minutes into the quarter to make it an 8-2 game.

Despite the Wildcat goal, Maryland continued with their strong defensive effort and went on to produce three more scores to end the game in favor of the Terps, 11-2.

Maryland was led on offense by Matt Rambo's three goals and one assist while nine Terps posted points on the afternoon. Goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr tallied nine saves for the win.

Defensively, Villanova's Greg Stamatov (Foxboro, Mass.) and Dan Willis (Moorestown, N.J.) combined for 13 saves in the defeat.

Villanova will return to action a week from today when they travel to Fairfield, Conn. to face the Fairfield Stags and it will mark the first time this season the Wildcats have left the state of Pennsylvania. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
