NEWARK, Del. - Redshirt freshman Alexandra Russo (Bellport, N.Y.) led a Villanova sweep of the top four finishing spots in the 1500 meters and sophomore Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) finished first in the javelin at the Delaware Open on Saturday afternoon. Those results highlighted the results for the Wildcats in the local meet at Grant Stadium, where the team had 17 athletes in action in six running events and five field events.
Russo established a personal best time of 4:43.31 in the 1500 meters and four Villanova runners crossed the finish line together after running in a pack during the race. The separation between the four was less than a quarter of a second, with Russo being followed by sophomore Julie Williams (Wilmington, Del.), sophomore Caitlin Bungo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Rebecca Del Rossi (Canton, N.Y.). Williams registered a time of 4:43.33, Bungo crossed the finish line in 4:43.43 and Del Rossi recorded a personal best time of 4:43.55.
The other running events the Wildcats competed in were sprints. Freshman Katie HoSang (Bedford, N.H.) notched a personal best time of 16.00 in the 100 meter hurdles, while she and classmate Marley Byrne (Auburn, Maine) tallied times of 27.35 and 27.47 in the 200 meters. Another freshman, Chloe Winn (San Francisco, Calif.), recorded a time of 1:01.68 in the 400 meters. Sophomore Arielle Massillon (Charlotte, N.C.) established a personal best time of 1:08.55 in the 400 meter hurdles.
Sophomore Ekiah Lewis (San Bernardino, Calif.) registered a season-best time of 12.35 in the 100 meters and also competed in the long jump. She had a mark of 5.11 meters in the long jump to finish in fifth place, while sophomore Danielle Wheatley (Greenbelt, Md.) was sixth with a jump of 5.07 meters.
Hamilton recorded a winning throw of 37.60 meters in the javelin and was part of a one-two finish for Villanova along with senior Abigail Freitag (Bridgeton, N.J.), who had a mark of 36.92 meters. Senior Alexi Stershic (Yardley, Pa.) and sophomore Hannah Lee (Scituate, R.I.) came in fifth (34.70m) and seventh (31.01m), respectively.
A trio of throwers competed in the shot put, discus and hammer. Sophomore Kristen Erickson (Princeton, Mass.) took part in all three events and threw for a personal best distance of 35.30 meters in the hammer. She also recorded marks of 11.88 meters in the shot put and 28.03 meters in the discus. Senior Alita Ostapkovich (Bensalem, Pa.) recorded marks of 37.11 meters in the discus and 39.72 meters in the hammer, while junior Claudia Tishler (Medfield, Mass.) had a personal best throw of 36.20 meters in the hammer.
