QUEENS, N.Y. - The Villanova baseball team (15-22, 3-5 BIG EAST) dropped its Saturday matinee, 10-7, to St. John's (24-13, 8-2 BIG EAST) as the Red Storm clinched the series. The two squads will close out the series tomorrow, Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. from Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y.

Junior Adam Goss flexed his power on Saturday with three hits including two going for extra bases and four of the Wildcats' runs batted in to lead the offense, but defense miscues hampered Villanova as St. John's clinched the conference series win.

VU started the scoring in the affair as freshman David Gulati drew a leadoff walk in his first at-bat. After a sacrifice bunt, Adam Goss knocked an RBI single to right field to score the first run of the game as the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Villanova tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning after a couple of defensive mistakes by the Red Storm. Sophomore Donovan May worked a one-out walk and was moved to second on a single by junior Eric Lowe. After a popout, Gulati ripped a ball to St. John's Jesse Berardi at second base who had some trouble making a clean play. As Gulati rushed down the line to reach on an error, May scored from second with aggressive, heads-up base running.

The ensuing batter, Morris, struck out but reached first on a wild pitch that brought Lowe home to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

The VU lead was short lived as the Red Storm added six runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. An error started the inning followed by a wild pitch and single that put runners on the corners. Back-to-back base hits then brought in two runs for SJU. Villanova starting pitcher Ryan Doty stuck out Tyler Sanchez for the first out, but after a hit by pitch, freshman Mike Sgaramella came into pitch for the Wildcats. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch tied the game at 3-all before the Red Storm's Robert Wayman hit a pinch hit, three-run home run over the left field fence. Villanova would not regain the lead for the remainder of the game.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Villanova scored two runs in the sixth. With two outs, Gulati reached for the third time with his second walk of the day which chased St. John's starting pitcher, Ryan McCormick, from the Saturday afternoon affair.

Morris singled through the left side off the new Red Storm reliever, Chris Kalica, to put runners on first and second for Goss. Goss rattled a triple off the wall in right field to score Gulati and Morris. The hit came as Goss' team-leading third triple on the season as he helped Villanova get within one run.

Errors plagued the Wildcats on Saturday as the leadoff batter for St. John's in the sixth reached and moved to second on the play. Wayman, who hit the homer in the fourth, notched an RBI double, giving St. John's a 7-5 lead after six innings of play.

SJU extended its lead to 10-5 after a three-run seventh. On three singles, a hit by pitch and a two-run double, St. John's took a five-run lead into the final two innings.

Adam Goss continued to show his power in the late innings, ripping a double that one-hopped the center field wall in the eighth to score Morris, who reached on a hit by pitch. It came as his fourth RBI on the day and second extra-base hit leaving him a home run shy of the cycle.

Villanova would score once more in the ninth via a pinch hit double from freshman Brady Acton. Lowe scored from first after he drew a one-out walk to make it 10-7.

Ryan Doty pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and four earned run (five runs) with two strikeouts. Mike Sgaramella tossed 2.2 innings allowing two runs, only one that was earned. Kagan Richardson faced three batters in the seventh inning as three runs were charged against him. John Santoianni got all three outs in the seventh, allowing just one hit. Joe Siringo pitched the eighth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning.

The BIG EAST series between Villanova and St. John's concludes tomorrow with first pitch set for 1 p.m. on Sunday. The game will be available for viewing on ESPN3.
