May 17, 2015 PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior sprinter Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica) became the latest Villanova athlete to win the ECAC 100 meter hurdles and senior Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded a personal best time in the 200 meters at Weaver Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Competition wrapped up at the ECAC Championship and the Wildcats tied for 11th place in the team standings despite having just a small contingent from its roster in competition.
Villanova has had a great deal of success in the 100 meter hurdles at the ECAC meet over the years, with Shericka Ward (2010, 2011) and current volunteer assistant coach Monique Morgan (2007) among recent champions. Grant recorded a winning time of 13.56 in Sunday's final after previously ranking second overall in both the preliminary heats and the semifinals a day earlier. Her time of 13.56 in the final is the second-fastest of her career, trailing only the mark of 13.53 that she ran in Saturday's semifinal heats. The time of 13.53 moved Grant up a spot to fifth on the Wildcats all-time performance list in the 100 meter hurdles.
Johnson broke a two-year old personal best in the 200 meters by crossing the finish line in 23.72. She already was second on the Villanova career performance list in the 200 meters and the time of 23.72 is the third-fastest in school history. Johnson finished third overall in the final.
Freshman Nicole Armstrong (Sydenham, Ont.) competed in the final of the 1500 meters on Sunday and finished seventh with a time of 4:30.13.
In the triple jump competition, senior Samantha Francis (Kingston, Jamaica) tied for 14th place with a mark of 11.76 meters.
