NEWARK, Del.--A group of a dozen athletes competed for Villanova at the Delaware Classic on Saturday afternoon and the Wildcats came away with a pair of first place finishes at Grant Stadium. Senior Kathleen McPhillips (Carlisle, Pa.) won the pole vault and sophomore Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) topped a field of 12 athletes in the javelin.
McPhillips cleared a height of 3.80 meters in the pole vault in her second competition in three days. She had recorded an outdoor personal best height of 3.90 meters two days earlier at the Penn Relays, where she won the college section of the event. Freshman Bridget Owen (Northborough, Mass.) and sophomore Alexandra Elder (Moorestown, N.J.) came in seventh and eighth, respectively, at the Delaware meet. Owen recorded a height of 3.30 meters and Elder cleared the bar at 3.15 meters.
In the javelin, Hamilton's first place finish led a group of five Villanova athletes who competed in the event. She threw for a distance of 40.39 meters, with senior Abigail Freitag (Bridgeton, N.J.) coming in second with a throw of 38.00 meters. Senior Alexi Stershic (Yardley, Pa.) recorded a personal best mark of 35.44 meters to finish in fourth place, while sophomore Hannah Lee (Scituate, R.I.) and freshman Katie HoSang (Bedford, N.H.) came in fifth (35.36m) and seventh (31.80m), respectively.
HoSang also ran in the 100 meter hurdles and finished third with a time of 16.56.
Sophomore thrower Kristen Erickson (Princeton, Mass.) competed in the shot put, discus and hammer throws during a busy afternoon. She was the runner-up out of 11 competitors in the shot put with a throw of 12.06 meters and also tallied a personal best mark of 29.96 meters in the discus. She placed 14th in the hammer with a mark of 31.23 meters. Junior Alita Ostapkovich (Bensalem, Pa.) placed fourth in the discus (36.59m) and sixth in the hammer (42.41m).
The other two throwers in competition for the Wildcats were junior Claudia Tishler (Medfield, Mass.) and freshman Marley Byrne (Auburn, Maine). Tishler recorded a personal best throw of 37.46 meters in the hammer to finish in ninth place, while Byrne placed 10th in the shot put (7.74m).
