Hilliard's is Introduced in Detroit

June 27, 2015

Highlights from the Detroit Pistons' introduction of draft selections Stanley Johnson (Arizona) and Darrun Hilliard (Villanova) held on June 27 in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Detroit Pistons President & Head Coach Stan Van Gundy: "With both of these guys, we liked the fact that they are coming from great programs where they have been pushed hard and held accountable. I think it's going to help their adjustment a lot."

"Darrun Hilliard was a four-year guy at Villanova. Another guy who has led his team to great, great success. (Villanova was) a No. 1 seed in the tournament this year and he was a part of a lot of wins at Villanova. We like guys that have come out of successful programs.

"We feel like we've got two very versatile guys here, guys who were leading guys on very successful teams and can do a lot of different things on the floor. We're excited to have them here today but more excited to get to work with them on Tuesday when we start working out for summer league."

Darrun Hilliard: "I want to thank the Pistons organization for taking a chance, giving me the opportunity to help this organization in any way we can. I know that we are going to come in and work. Hopefully we can put our two cents in to get Detroit basketball back to where it's supposed to be."

"I think the most meaningful thing that happened to me in (this process) was my interview. My interview was one to remember. It was a great interview. We got real into it, in a good way. I think that my interview impressed me the most."

Hilliard on his family's reaction to his being selected No. 38 overall: "They were probably more excited than I was. I turned my phone off that whole day so my agent was pretty upset with me. I finally got a call from my agent and he let me know that the Pistons were going to take me at 38. But I didn't say anything ââ'¬" I kind of walked outside and watched it through the window.

"When they said my name I lost both of my earrings, broke my chain, it was great. I was like, 'you are all going to have to chill out and enjoy this moment.' But it was great."

On what he knows about Detroit and the Pistons organization: "I just like that everybody here is straight and up front ââ'¬" right to the point. Coach Van Gundy is similar to Coach (Jay) Wright in some ways. He'll yell at you and get in your face when he has to but he has supreme confidence in you if you have supreme confidence in yourself. I really enjoyed that and (general manager) Mr. (Jeff) Bower is as good as they come. The staff here is grade A and I'm excited to be part of it."

Hilliard on the process leading up to Draft Night: "I feel like I've been living on a plane. When you've got 15 workouts, you're traveling from city to city. You fly here, you fly back home, you go to Orlando. It's kind of good, though. You don't allow yourself to get out of shape. You can just come to work."

Van Gundy on his familiarity with Johnson and Hilliard: "My role in the scouting process during the season is that I basically read (assistant general manager) Brian Wright's reports every week. These guys were both easy to me for different reasons.

"With Darrun, it was not only because I know Jay but I had the broadcast their games (at the 2013 Battle 4 Atlantis) when they won the championship down there. So I had seen Darrun play a lot. I liked his game there and had talked about him a lot on those broadcasts so it was a familiar name."
