HAVERFORD, Pa. - For the second straight meet to begin the season, Villanova split its lineup between an official lineup of competing runners and a group of unattached athletes. Junior Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) was one of the unattached runners and he tallied a first place finish with a 12-second margin of victory at the Main Line Invitational on Friday evening. Junior Harry Warnick (Fairfield, Conn.) led the group of scoring runners with a 14th place finish and the Wildcats came in fourth in the team standings.
Warnick covered the four-mile Alumni Course at Haverford College in 19:58 and was followed closely by junior Kevin Corbusier (Monkton, Md.) in 18th place with a time of 20:01. The other scoring runners for Villanova were sophomore Drake Johnston (Santa Monica, Calif.) in 23rd place (20:17), freshman Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom) in 33rd place (20:35) and senior Robert Hurlbut (Rochester, N.Y.) in 40th place (20:44).
A field of 150 runners competed at the meet, which included seven teams plus the unattached entries. The top five runners for the Wildcats had a spread of 46 seconds and Villanova finished with 97 points in the team standings despite running with only a partial lineup. Penn came in first with 15 points and was followed by La Salle (76) and Haverford (90) in the top three. Following the Wildcats were Temple (118), Widener (171) and Swarthmore (190).
Senior Tom Trainer (Havertown, Pa.), sophomore Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) and junior Josh Lampron (Mansfield, Mass.) were separated by just nine seconds at the finish line. Trainer recorded a time of 20:48 and finished 45th overall, while Malone and Lampron were 48th and 49th, respectively, with identical times of 20:53. Sophomore Zach Swenson (Boulder, Colo.) finished 63rd (21:12) and freshman Colin O'Mara (Little Rock, Ark.) was 87th (21:42).
The entire field in the race was paced by Tiernan, who crossed the finish line in 19:16 and came in 12 seconds ahead of Nicholas Tuck from Penn (19:28). Tiernan averaged a 4:49 mile for the race. Six true freshmen followed Tiernan, with Casey Comber (Maple Glen, Pa.) and Andrew Marston (Wayne, Pa.) running well in third and fifth places, respectively. Comber registered a time of 19:30 and Marston was close behind in 19:35.
Griffin Tichenor (Unionville, Ind.) came in 27th (20:23), Paul Power (Phoenixville, Pa.) was 31st, Lucas Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished 66th (21:18) and Louie Vazquez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed 102nd (22:01). Sophomore Kieran Brennan (Pearl River, N.Y.) rounded out the unattached contingent with a time of 23:44 in 136th place.
This is the 13th straight year that Villanova competed in the Main Line meet. After having next weekend off, the Wildcats will return to action at the Paul Short Run on October 2.
