Final Stats

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Villanova volleyball team opened its 2015 BIG EAST schedule with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-20 straight set win over Georgetown Friday night in our nation's capital.

The Wildcats (11-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) were led by Allie Loitz (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) with a dozen kills and five service aces. Loitz's five aces were part of 10 service aces by Wildcat servers.

"We served really well and played really clean for the first two sets," said Villanova head coach Josh Steinbach. "And then we played well enough to win the third set."

Emma Pettit (Ft. Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) accumulated 27 assists while Allison Fitzgerald (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) led the defense with 11 digs. The Wildcats controlled the net with nine blocks, five coming from Gabby Pethokoukis (Western Springs, Ill./Benet Academy).

Villanova jumped out to a 5-1 lead and extended that lead to 8-2 early in the first set. The Wildcats led the entire set and won the set on a Pettit service ace.

The second set was tied 5-5 before Villanova went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 lead. The seven point lead held up when 'Nova led 20-13 and capped the set on a 5-0 run.

The Wildcats trailed in the third set 10-6 but another 7-0 run gave them a 13-10 lead. Loitz and Pethokoukis teamed up for a stuff block for the final point of the match.

The Villanova volleyball team travels to Omaha, Neb. for its next match on Sunday against BIG EAST favorite Creighton at 2:00pm.
