Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova swimming and diving teams hosted their first meet of the year during Homecoming Weekend. The Villanova women's team picked up two victories on the day. The Wildcats defeated La Salle (245-53) and Drexel ( 177.5-122.5). The men's team fell to La Salle (181-118) and Drexel (200.5-99.5).
Prior to the meet, head coach Rick Simpson and the teams recognized Geraldine Arege '90 and her family for their generous donation, which allowed the swimming and diving program to create "The Arege Family Record Board."
The Wildcat men had a strong showing in the second event of the afternoon. The 200 medley relay team of Andrew Kelley, Tyler Nussbaum, Jake Hoin and Christopher Paynter took first place with a time of 1:34.48.
In the very next event, Caitlin Daday, Erin Merkle and Christine Sullivan took the top three spots in the women's 1000 free. Daday finished with a time of 10:24.45, while Merkle and Sullivan clocked in at 10:38.59 and 10:39.64 respectively.
Alexa Fabbri and Emily Mayo earned first and second place performances in the 200 free. Fabbri finished with a time of 1:53.10. Mayo was just behind her, touching the wall at 1:53.89.
Two Villanova swimmers had top five finished in the 200 free. Stephen Krecsmar took third place with a time of 1:44.75, and John Paul Naughton placed fifth at 1:45.52.
Darby Goodwin set a new pool record at the Pavilion in the women's 100 back when she touched the wall at 55.80. She also took first in the 200 back, finishing more than four seconds ahead of the next opponent with a time of 2:02.14.
Goodwin and teammate Gabby Daigneault earned the top two spots in the 200 IM. Goodwin took first place with a time of 2:06.57. Daigneault finished just behind her at 2:09.86.
Elise Pidutti and Heather Farley placed second and third respectively in the 100 breast. Pidutti touched the wall at 1:07.48, while Farley finished at 1:08.01. Pidutti also took second in the 200 breast.
In the women's 200 fly, Mackenzie Niness placed first with a time of 2:05.76. Teammate Tarryn Els took third place after touching the wall at 2:07.59.
Taylor Wilson placed second in the women's 50 free and 100 free with times of 24.06 and 52.37 respectively. Mary Snyder placed one spot behind Wilson in the 100 free, finishing in third place at 53.83.
Jake Hoin took the top spot in the men's 50 free, when he touched the wall at 21.44. Hoin also had a good result in the 100 fly, finishing in second place with a time of 51.21.
Villanova earned the top four spots in the women's 500 free. Emily Mayo was the first Wildcat to finish in the event with a time of 5:03.91. Caitlin Daday, Christine Sullivan and Erin Merkle placed second, third, and fourth respectively.
In the 100 fly, Alexa Fabbri had a first place finish. Fabbri touched the wall at 57.71, edging the next competitor by .02 seconds.
At the final swimming events of the afternoon, the Villanova women's 400 free relay team of Taylor Wilson, Elise Pidutti, Mary Snyder and Alexa Fabbri placed first with a time of 3:30.40.
The men's 400 free relay team of Christopher Paynter, Stephen Krecsmar, Tyler Nussbaum and Jake Hoin took third place at 3:10.07.
The Wildcats also had good showings in the diving events, which were contested at Drexel. In the women's one meter event, Bridget Dunn placed second with a score 230.95. Dunn also had a top three finish in the three meter event with a third place finish.
Michael Perra took third place in the men's one meter and three meter events, finishing with scores of 241.65 and 217.70 respectively.
Villanova will be back in action Nov. 4-5 at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Quad Meet.
