Wildcats Fall to George Washington in Home Opener

In the 2016-17 home opener, the Villanova Wildcats lost a hard fought 72-69 game to the George Washington Colonials. With the loss, Villanova falls to 1-2 on the season, while George Washington improves to 3-1.

With the game tied at 39-39 with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter, the Colonials used a 7-0 run to take 46-39 lead. Junior guard Camila Tapias led the George Washington run with a three-point field and a foul shot. The Colonials would use the spurt to propel them to a 57-50 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Trailing 64-56 with 6:01 to play, Villanova cut the lead to 64-62 on back-to-back three balls by sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn and junior guard Alex Louin. The Colonials came right back to increase the lead to 68-62 at the 3:48 mark on two free throws by Brianna Cummings and a lay-up by Caira Washington.

A Louin three pulled Villanova within a basket at 68-66 with 1:09 on the clock, before George Washington senior guard Hannah Schaible made two free throws with 51 seconds to play to give her team a 70-66 advantage.

Wildcat sophomore forward Jannah Tucker made one of two from the foul line to make it a 71-67 game with 21 seconds remaining. After Schaible missed two free throws, the Wildcats cut the lead to 71-69 on an offensive rebound put back by junior center Megan Quinn with five seconds on the clock.

Schaible went one of two from the stripe with 5.1 seconds remaining to make it a 72-69 game. The Wildcats then called a timeout and advanced to the ball to the front court. Villanova ran a play looking for the game-tying three, but Colonial forward Lexi Martins deflected a pass to preserve the win for George Washington.

In the loss, the Wildcats were led by Tucker who scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting, including a 4-of-12 effort from three-point range. Quinn finished with 18 points and six rebounds, while Louin had 12 points, a career-high five steals and four assists.

George Washington was paced by Caira Washington with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Schaible who also had 15 points. Cummings finished with 11 points, while Tapias chipped in with 10 points.

For the game, Villanova shot 37.9 percent from the field (25-of-66), 30.3 percent from three-point range (10-of-33) and 69.2 percent from the foul line (9-of-13), while George Washington was 27-of-63 from the floor (42.9%), 8-of-14 from long distance (57.1%) and 10-of-20 from the free throw line (50.0%). The Colonials owned a 49-33 advantage on the backboards. The Wildcats were charged with eight turnovers.
