Wildcats Fall to Troy in San Juan Shootout

The Villanova Wildcats fell to the Troy Trojans in the first round of the San Juan Shootout on Thursday, Nov. 24, by a score of 93-85. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 1-3 on the young season, while Troy improves to 3-1 on the year.

Troy started the second half on a 21-4 run to erase a 45-37 Villanova halftime advantage and lead 58-49. Amanda Mendoza led the third quarter charge for the Trojans by scoring her team's first 10 points of the quarter.

The Trojans would shoot 53.3 percent from the field in the third quarter and go 10-of-10 from the foul line and out score the Wildcats by a 30-15 margin. The 30 point quarter gave Troy a 67-60 lead entering play in the fourth quarter.

Troy led 88-77 at the 1:47 mark of the fourth quarter, when Wildcat redshirt freshman forward Grace Stant and freshman guard Kelly Jekot hit back-to-back threes to pull Villanova within five at 88-83 with 53 seconds on the clock. The Trojans would then go five-of-six from the foul line down the stretch to seal the win.

Villanova controlled play for most of the first half. With the score tied at 9-9, the Wildcats used a 13-2 run to take a 22-11 advantage with 3:01 remaining in the opening quarter. A four-point play by junior guard Alex Louin started the run to give the Wildcats a 13-9 lead. After a three-ball by sophomore Jannah Tucker, Bridget Herlihy made one of two from the foul line and sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn buried a triple. Tucker finished the spurt with a pull-up jumper. The Wildcats would use the run to take a 29-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A lay-up by Jekot gave Villanova its largest lead of the game at 42-28 with 4:28 remaining in the second quarter. Following the Jekot bucket, the Wildcats scored just three points the rest of the half and Troy outscored Villanova, 9-3, to slice the Wildcat lead to 45-37 at halftime.

In the loss, Louin led the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points. She was 4-of-11 from the field, 3-of-8 from three-point range and 12-of-13 from the foul line. Three other Wildcats scored double figures, including Hahn with 14 points, Jekot with 12 points and Tucker who had 10 points. Megan Quinn grabbed eight rebounds for Villanova.

Troy was paced by Mendoza with 21 points and Claresa Banks who had 20 points.

For the game, Villanova was 24-of-64 from the field (37.5%), 12-of-41 from three-point range (29.3%) and 25-of-32 from the foul line (78.1%), while Troy shot 41.5 percent from the floor (27-of-65), 53.3 percent from three-point range (8-of-15) and 83.8 percent from the charity stripe (31-of-37). Troy owned a 45-36 advantage on the backboards.

Villanova will return to action on Friday night when they take on Virginia Commonwealth in game two of the San Juan Shootout. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
