Villanova Cruises To 78-52 Exhibition Win At East Stroudsburg

The Villanova women's basketball team traveled to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday evening where they tallied a 78-52 win in exhibition play.

After East Stroudsburg's Imani Brown scored the first two points of the game, the Wildcats scored 15 straight points to open up a 15-2 advantage. Back-to-back three-point field goals by sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn and a triple by sophomore forward Jannah Tucker highlighted the Villanova run.

A lay-up by Warrior guard Rebecca Rutkowski ended the Villanova scoring run and sliced the lead to 15-4, before Tucker scored five consecutive points on a three-ball and a lay-up to give the Wildcats a 20-4 lead. The Wildcats would take a 24-6 lead into the second quarter.

Redshirt freshman forward Grace Stant buried consecutive threes to start the second quarter to propel Villanova to a 30-6 lead. A lay-up by redshirt freshman Bridget Herlihy gave Villanova a 40-17 lead with 1:15 left in the opening half. East Stroudsburg closed out the first half scoring when Rachel Falkowski drained a deep three from the right wing. The three sent Villanova to halftime with a commanding 40-20 lead.

Villanova outscored East Stroudsburg, 11-5, over the first 3:30 of the third stanza to open up a 51-25 lead. The 11 Wildcat points included a lay-up and 10-foot jumper by Tucker, two lay-ups by freshman Mary Gedaka and three-point field goal by Herlihy.

Following the opening third quarter spurt, the Warriors would not get within 18 the rest of the way and Villanova would cruise to the win.

In the victory, Tucker led the way with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including a 5-of-12 effort from three-point range. She also added five steals and four rebounds. Herlihy added 15 points and five rebounds off the bench, while Stant and Hahn had 11 points each with three triples apiece. Gedaka had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Brown and Allison Howard had 15 points each for East Stroudsburg.

For the game, Villanova was 29-of-72 from the field (40.3%), 12-of-37 from three-point range (32.4%) and 8-of-14 from the foul line (57.1%), while the Warriors shot 31.6 percent from the floor (18-of-57), 36.4 percent from long distance (8-of-22) and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe (8-of-12). The Wildcats owned a 50-35 advantage on the backboards. Villanova was charged with just five turnovers.

Villanova will open the 2016-17 season on Nov. 11-12 in the University of Maine Tip-off Classic. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Mississippi State in the first round on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
