VILLANOVA, PA. ââ'¬" In Big Five women's basketball action on Saturday, Dec. 10, the Villanova Wildcats fell to the Temple Owls by a score of 83-48. With the loss, Villanova falls to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in Big Five play, while the Owls improve to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in City Series action.
After a three-ball by Wildcat sophomore forward Jannah Tucker sliced the Temple lead to 11-9 with 3:28 remaining in the opening quarter, the Owls finished the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 23-9 lead. Two three-point field goals by Alliya Butts led the Temple charge.
Temple maintained the momentum into the second quarter as the Owls outscored the Wildcats by a 12-5 margin over the first 5:05 to take a 35-14 lead. The Wildcats would score the final four points of the quarter and go to halftime trailing 37-21. The two Villanova buckets came on a jump shot sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn and a lay-up by freshman forward Mary Gedaka.
The Wildcats trailed 55-32 midway through the third quarter when Tucker scored five straight points on a triple and a pull-up jump shot to cut the Temple advantage to 55-37. Villanova got two straight defensive stops, but misfired on consecutive threes that would have sliced into the Owl lead.
Temple finished the third quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 66-39 lead entering play in the fourth quarter.
In the loss, Tucker led the Wildcats with 15 points to go with two rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Hahn finished with 10 points.
The Owls were paced by Butts who scored a game-high 27 points and senior guard Feyonda Fitzgerald had 20 points and eight assists. Donnaizha Fountain registered a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Fountain also had a game-high four steals.
For the game, Villanova was 19-of-61 from the field (31.1%), 9-of-33 from three-point range (27.3%) and 1-of-3 from the foul line (33.3%), while Temple shot 46.8 percent from the floor (29-of-62), 35.8 percent from behind the arc (35.0%) and 90.0 percent from the charity stripe (18-of-20). Temple owned a 50-27 advantage on the backboards.
Villanova will be off until Dec. 21 when the Wildcats travel to Duke. The Wildcats next home game is set for Dec. 28 against Marquette at noon.
