In women's basketball action on Friday, Dec. 30, the Villanova Wildcats fell to the No. 22 DePaul Blue Demons by a score of 80-50. With the loss, the Wildcats drop to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in Big East action, while DePaul improves to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in league play.
The Blue Demons led 6-2 midway through the first quarter when Wildcat sophomore forward Jannah Tucker connected on back-to-back three-point field goals to give the Wildcats an 8-6 advantage. After DePaul forward Jacqui Grant converted an old fashioned three-point play to put her team up 9-8, Wildcat freshman guard Kelly Jekot scored on a driving lay-up and Adrianna Hahn made two free throws and Villanova led 12-9.
DePaul finished the opening quarter on 9-0 run to take an 18-12 lead.
Amarah Coleman had a three-point field goal and a pull-up jumper to lead the Blue Demon charge.
Leading 25-18 at the 5:14 mark of the second quarter, DePaul held the Wildcats to just two points the rest of the half to open up a 36-20 lead at intermission.
After Hahn scored the first points of the second half on a lay-up at the 8:04 mark, the Blue Demons used a 13-2 run to take a commanding 49-24 lead with 3:53 remaining in the third quarter. Grant was dominant in the run for DePaul scoring nine of the 13 points.
In the loss, Tucker led Villanova with 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting, including a 5-of-9 effort from three-point range. The five triples represent a career-high. Jekot had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds, while senior forward Jordan Dillard added eight points.
DePaul was paced by Brook Schulte with 23 points and Grant who had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Coleman finished with 17 points.
For the game, Villanova shot 30.6 percent from the field (19-of-62), 29.4 percent from three-point range (5-of-17) and 77.8 percent from the foul line (7-of-9), while DePaul was 32-of-74 from the field (43.2%), 8-of-26 from long distance (30.8%) and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe (88.9%). Villanova returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4, when the Wildcats host the Georgetown Hoyas. Tip-off at The Pavilion is set for 7 p.m.
