Feb. 26, 2016 VILLANOVA, Pa. ââ'¬" The Villanova Wildcats head back out on the road for their final trip of the regular season as they get set to visit Marquette (18-10 overall, 7-8 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Conference clash Saturday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center at 2 p.m.
Gus Johnson and Jim Jackson will be on the call for Fox nationally, with the contest airing locally on Fox 29 Philadelphia. On the radio side, Ryan Fannon and Whitey Rigsby will handle the Nova Nation broadcast available locally on 610 Sports Radio WTEL and nationally on Sirius 93/XM 201.
The Wildcats hope to rebound from a 90-83 loss on Wednesday night at No. 5 Xavier. Foul trouble was an issue for Villanova with three 'Cats ââ'¬" Kris Jenkins, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges ââ'¬" ultimately fouling out of the contest. In addition, Daniel Ochefu was also limited to 24 minutes by foul challenges.
"It's no easy task playing those guys," stated Xavier head coach Chris Mack following the game. "They are as good as it gets in college basketball. It was going to take a monumental effort from our team for 40 minutes and I think that's what we gave."
Jenkins finished the evening with 22 points in just 19 minutes. It was the third consecutive double digit scoring effort for the junior from Upper Marlboro, Md., who has averaged 19.0 ppg in that span and was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday.
"It helped that the best player on the floor, at least in terms of production, Kris Jenkins, went out early," noted Mack. "He is a phenomenal player. We tried to recruit him. (He has) an ability to stretch the defense and he's gotten better as time has gone on with shot-faking, drawing fouls, and posting up."
The Golden Eagles will present another significant challenge for Villanova (24-4 overall, 13-2 BIG EAST). Marquette defeated Creighton Wednesday and is a young squad on the rise in the BIG EAST under second year head coach Steve Wojciechowski. Saturday the school hosts "National Marquette Day".
Villanova pulled away from the Golden Eagles for an 83-68 win at the Pavilion on Jan. 13 after falling behind Marquette at halftime 38-37.
"We had a tough time the first game with Marquette and we know this is a good young team that keeps getting better," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright.
The Wildcats return to the Pavilion on Tuesday night to host DePaul in the penultimate game of the BIG EAST regular season (7 p.m./FS1 and 610 Sports Radio WTEL). A home date with Georgetown on March 5 at the Wells Fargo Center will bring the curtain down on the regular season for VU.
