Clearwater, Fla. - Villanova (4-5, 0-0 BIG EAST) continued tournament play Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats narrowly beat Seton Hall 4-3 in nine innings.
Seton Hall would strike first in the top of the first inning as pitcher Lauren Fischer hit a SAC fly to left to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Villanova would tie the game up in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Lauren Hanna doubled. Shea Palmer would fly out bringing Sierra McConnell to the plate. The Katy, Texas native would reach base on an error scoring Hanna to tie the game at 1-1.
The Wildcat offense continued to stay hot in the bottom of the third inning. Brittany Husk led off the inning with a double. Dana Morris would single advancing Husk to third base. Following a Nikki Alden fly out, Chase Snell walked to load the bases. Hanna would strike out bring Palmer to plate who reached base on an error plating Husk to give VU a 2-1 lead.
Sierra McConnell would then walk scoring Morris to extend the Villanova lead to 3-1.
The Pirates would rally in the top of the seventh inning as Alexis Walkden hit a two-run homerun off Brette Lawrence to tie the game at 3-3.
The Wildcats would win the game in bottom half of the ninth inning as Chase Snell RBI singled home Lauren Herschberg for the 4-3 extra inning victory.
Kate Poppe (3-3) got the win for Villanova in relief of Lawrence. Lawrence went 7.0 innings giving up eight hits and three runs while striking out five. Poppe pitched two innings in relief giving up just one hit.
Morris, Snell, and Tianah Hathaway all went 2-for-4 at the plate. As a team, Villanova pounded out nine hits.
The Wildcats will now play Georgia State tomorrow at 10:00 in the tournament championship game.
