East Meadow, N.Y. - For the third straight season, the Villanova women's swimming and diving team were crowned BIG EAST Champions Saturday night following another historic performance in the pool.
The Wildcat women finished with 1,013 points while the men placed fourth with 469 points. Junior Emily Mayo would start off Saturday's finals by taking home her second individual gold medal (500 free) in the 1650 free as she touched the wall at 16:35.38. Cailtin Daday placed second at 16:44:49.
On the men's side, John Paul Naughton (16:04.68) placed fourth while Harrison Rodts (16:16:03) finished sixth.
Darby Goodwin would break another record this weekend this time in the 200 back as she won the gold medal at 1:56.55 which is an NCAA "B" cut time. She set the previous record of 1:58.30 back in December at the Princeton Big Al Open. Gabby Daigneault placed fourth at 2:01.03.
The Villanova women would sweep the 100 free as Kaisla Kollanus (49.10, B Cut), Alexa Fabbri (49.73, B Cut), and Taylor Wilson (50.05) went 1-2-3. Kollanus' time is a new Villanova program record. She broke her own record of 49.67.
For the men, Joe Moleski placed eighth in the men's "A" final of the 100 free at 46.42.
The 200 breast saw Georgetown's Molly Fitzpatrick take home gold at 2:12.44. Olivia Cacciatore (2:18.83), Heather Farley (2:19.17), and Elise Pidutti (2:20.41) captured the 3-4-5 spots on the medal podium.
The VU women would once again sweep an event this time the 100 fly. Mackenzie Niness was crowned the gold medalist with her time of 2:00.46. Fiona Hardie placed second at 2:00.91 and Christine Sullivan finished third at 2:02.97.
In men's 1-meter diving, Zachary Romanovsky placed fifth with a score of 411.30
The Wildcat women would close out the championships with one final record breaking performance this time in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Wilson, Goodwin, Fabbri, and Kollanus shattered the old school record 3:22.35 with a 3:18.76 "B" cut time
Joe Moleski, Murphy Smith, Tyler Nussbaum, and Jake Hoin finished fourth in the 400 free relay at 3:04.61.
Goodwin was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet after she won three individual gold medals in the 200 IM, 100 and 200 back. Goodwin also took home gold as a member of the 400 medley and 200 medley relay teams as well as the 400 free relay team.
Kollanus won three individual gold medals this weekend. Kollanus swept the 50, 100, and 200 free events. She also won gold as a member of the 200, 400, and 800 free relay teams as well as the 400 medley relay.
Rick Simpson was named BIG EAST Women's Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season.
In total, the Villanova men and women broke 13 records at the conference championships. The VU women won all but two swimming events this past weekend.
