Swimming and Diving Drops Dual Meet at Penn State

- The Villanova men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Happy Valley Saturday afternoon for dual meet against the Penn State Nittany Lions. The men were defeated by PSU 151-104 while the women dropped their decision to No. 21 Penn State by a 153-125 margin.

The Wildcat men fall to 2-7 (0-2 BIG EAST play) on the year while the women are now 8-2 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST competition.

The Villanova women opened up the meet with a third place showing in the 200 medley relay. Darby Goodwin, Elise Pidutti, Fiona Hardie, and Kaisla Kollanus finished at 1:46.37.

Goodwin would also place third in the 100 back with a time of 57.10, and she captured Villanova's first as she won the 200 back at 2:03.71. Gabby Daigneault took home third place in the same event with a 2:05.36 showing.

Freshman Alexa Fabbri and Taylor Wilson went 4-5 in the 50 free with times of 24.36 and 24.49 respectively. Fabbri would also finish first in the 100 free at 52.80. The 500 free saw Emily Mayo capture first place with a 4:56.06 showing.

The 100 breaststroke saw Pidutti captured third place at 1:06.07. The Australian native would also place second in the 200 breast at 2:23.51. In the 200 fly, Christine Sullivan took home third place with a time of 2:06.47. Mackenzie Niness finished right behind Sullivan in fourth at 2:07.45.

Villanova swept the 100 fly as Hardie, Niness and Kristin Haufler went 1-2-3. The Wildcats also went 1-2-3 in the 200 IM as Goodwin, Daigneault, and Olivia Cacciatore took home the top threes spots.

For the men, Harrison Rodts and Greg Cino went 3-4 in the 1000 freestyle picking up three and two points respectively. Rodts touched the wall at 10:09.30 while Cino finished at 10:10.04.

Ian Kleinsmith placed third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.54. Ryan Murtha finished two hundredths of a second behind his fellow teammate at 1:04.56. The 100 free saw Joe Moleski, Murtha, and Patrick Sullivan finish 1-2-3 at 49.24, 49.44, and 49.97.

The men closed out the meet with a sweep in the 400 medley relay.

The Wildcat women return to action tomorrow Sun. Feb. 7, as they host the LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds at noon for Senior Day. Ceremonies will begin at 11:50 a.m. at the Pavilion Pool Complex. Regular season competition for the men is complete. They will next compete at the BIG EAST championships starting on Feb. 24 in East Meadow, N.Y.
