Delaware Takes Game Two, 4-3

Newark, Del. - After dropping game one earlier this morning to Delaware 6-4, Villanova (9-10, 0-0 BIG EAST) fell in game two versus the Blue Hens, 4-3.

Villanova's bats would strike first in the top of the first inning.

With two outs, Dana Morris reached first after getting hit by a pitch. Nikki Alden would advance Morris to second after she reached first on a fielding error by the Delware shortstop. Chase Snell would load the bases with her single bringing Lauren Hanna to the plate.

Hanna would rip a two-run RBI double to left center scoring both Alden and Morris to give Villanova an early 2-0 lead.

The Blue Hens would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2. Anna Steinmetz and Lisa Stacevicz each had RBI singles in the inning off of VU starter Brette Lawrence.

After Delaware's Carolyn Szymanski set the Wildcats down in order in the top half of the second inning, the Blue Hens would respond in the bottom half of the inning thanks to senior outfielder Hannah George.

George led off the inning with a solo homerun to left field to give Delaware a 3-2 lead.

Villanova would fight back in the top of the third inning thanks to some spotty defense by the Blue Hens.

Brittany Husk led off the inning by reaching first due to an error by the Delaware third baseman. Morris would then reach first due to two errors by the UDel shortstop and first baseman. Husk would score on the play to tie the game at 3-3 with Morris advancing to second.

Once again, Delaware would fight back as George led off the bottom half of the fourth inning with a single up the middle. Shelby Jones would advance George to second base via a sacrifice bunt bringing Leanna Gearhart to the plate.

The sophomore infielder RBI doubled to left center scoring George and giving the Blue Hens a 4-3 lead.

After VU failed to score in the top half of the fifth inning, Delaware had runners on second and third with two outs, but Lawrence got out of the inning unscathed giving up zero runs keeping the Delaware lead at 4-3.

VU would attempt to rally in the top of the seventh inning as Lauren Herschberg led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. Herschberg would advance to second on a wild pitch. Husk would advance Herschberg to third after laying down a sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning. Morris would ground out to shortstop and Alden would ground out to first to end the game.

Lawrence (3-2) took the loss as she went six innings giving up four runs on ten hits while whiffing three batters.

Herschberg went 1-for-3 at the plate while Hanna was 1-for-3 with two RBI's. Overall, Herschberg was 4-for-12 with 5 RBI's, two walks, one double, and one run scored.

Villanova went 1-3 this weekend with their lone win Saturday against North Carolina A&T 9-1.

The 'Cats will return to action next weekend as they travel to Towson, Md. for the Towson Tiger Classic. VU will play two games on both Saturday, March 19th, and Sunday March 20th.

Villanova will play host Towson at 1:30 on Saturday followed by Mount St. Mary's at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, VU will play Fordham at 11:00 a.m. and Mount St. Mary's again at 1:30 p.m.
