Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats (11-13, 0-3 BIG EAST) got back into the win column Monday afternoon as they swept the Monmouth Hawks 1-0 in game one and 10-7 in game two.

Game 1

Their 1-0 win in game one snapped the Wildcat's six-game losing streak.

Senior pitcher Kate Poppe went all seven innings giving up just two hits while striking out nine Monmouth batters.

Villanova's lone run came in the bottom half of the first inning courtesy of Dana Morris. Lauren Herschberg started off the inning getting hit-by-a-pitch. After Herschberg stole second base, Brittany Husk moved her to third base following a beautiful SAC bunt. Morris, the native of Scottsdale, Ariz., smacked an RBI single up the middle scoring Herschberg for the 1-0 Villanova lead.

That single run was all Poppe needed to pick up her sixth win of the season. Nikki Alden was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double. Aleshia Ayers also picked up a single in the game.

Game 2

Game two saw much more offense from both teams.

Monmouth would strike first in the top of the first inning as Justene Reyes ripped a single down the right field line scoring Emma Hill to give Monmouth a 1-0 lead.

VU would take the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Chase Snell had an RBI groundout to second to give Villanova a 2-1 lead. Monmouth would tack on two more runs in the top half of the third inning courtesy of Reyes again, and Ashalynn's Umiamaka's SAC fly to left field to make it 4-2 game.

The Wildcats would explode in the bottom half of the fourth inning with three runs courtesy of some timely hitting from Sierra McConnell. With two outs and two runners on base and run already in, McConnell pinched hit for Tianah Hathaway and ripped an RBI double to centerfield scoring Mackenzie Tilles to tie the game at 4-4.

Lauren Herschberg would give Villanova the 5-4 lead with her double to left field scoring McConnell.

The Hawks would respond with three more runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Once again, the Wildcats would put up a three spot of their own in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take an 8-7 lead. VU scored three runs, all of them unearned, as Monmouth committed two errors in the inning.

Villanova tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom half of the second inning to preserve the win for Jordan Prutzer who entered in relief of starter Brette Lawrence in the fifth inning.

Prutzer (2-1) picked up her second win of the season going 2.2 innings giving up three hits and zero runs.

Chase Snell was 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI's.

Villanova will return to action tomorrow as they host Drexel at the VU Softball Complex starting at 3:00 p.m.
