Villanova Hosts Lafayette Thursday for Doubleheader

Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova softball team (19-13, 6-3 BIG EAST) will look to improve upon their ten-game winning streak Thursday as they host the Lafayette Leopards for a doubleheader.

Game one will start at 3:00 p.m. with game two to follow at 5:00 p.m. All home games are played at the Villanova Softball Complex.

Villanova is currently riding a ten-game winning streak after sweeping Seton Hall last week and beating Penn 12-0 (F5) last Tuesday afternoon.

Junior Chase Snell was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this week for her performance last week.

For the week, Snell was 5-for-7 (.714) with two RBI's, and four runs scored. In BIG EAST play, Snell batted .833. while her slugging percentage was at .714. The native of Poway, Calif. is hitting .379 on the year, and she is second on the team in hits with 36.

Senior pitcher Kate Poppe (13-9) went 3-0 this past weekend as Villanova took three games from conference foe Seton Hall. Her first was a 10-3 win over the Pirates last Sunday in which she recorded her 900th career strikeout. Poppe ranks second in the NCAA Division I in active career strikeouts with 910. Her second win was a 9-5 win over Seton Hall in game two Sunday. Poppe finished off the Pirates this past Monday with a 2-1 win in nine innings.

Sophomore shortstop Brittany Husk was 6-for-9 with five RBI's, and four runs scored last week. Husk, who hails from Miami, Fla., is tied for first on the team in doubles with nine. She is hitting .330 on the year.

Senior Shea Palmer returned from injury last week going 4-for-7 at the plate with two RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native is hitting .297 on the year in 64 at-bats.

Overall, the 'Cats have seven players who are .300 or better this season. As a team, Villanova is hitting which is good for 38th in the country.

Scouting the Leopards

Lafayette enters play Thursday at 10-22 overall and 2-7 in Patriot League play having taken two out of three games from conference foe Holy Cross this past weekend.

Brooke Wensel and Samantha Sweigart leads Lafayette offensively as both are hitting .333 this season. Wensel has accounted for team-high 33 hits this season. She is also tied for the team lead in RBI's with 15.

On the pitching side, Kristyn Marinelli is 3-6 on the year with a 4.32 ERA in 60.0 innings pitched. She has struck out 26 batters.

Villanova is 13-4 since 1999 vs. the Leopards. The Wildcats split a doubleheader last year in Easton against Lafayette.
