Final Stats

Omaha, Neb. - Villanova (24-13, 9-3 BIG EAST) continues to dominate conference play as the Wildcats took down the Creighton Bluejays , 4-2, Sunday for their 15th straight victory.

Lauren Herschberg wasted no time Sunday to extend her hitting streak to fourteen games with a leadoff single to right field. With two outs, the red-hot Nikki Alden came to the plate and hit her fourth homerun of the series to give Villanova a 2-0 lead.

Alden now has a team-high seven homeruns on the year.

Creighton thought they got a run back in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

With two outs, Allie Reinhart got on base after getting hit with a pitch. Reinhart was lifted for a pinch runner in Katie Pascuzzi. Anna O'Gorman would then double to centerfield off Kate Poppe but Pascuzzi was ruled out for leaving early. The score remained 2-0 and O'Gorman's double did not count keeping Poppe's no-hitter intact.

The 'Cats would tack on two key insurance runs in the top half of the sixth inning as Aleshia Ayers and Sierra McConnell each had RBI singles in the inning.

Creighton would finally get a hit off Poppe in the bottom of the sixth inning as the speedy Aujanae McCoy laid down a bunt single. McCoy was the same batter who broke up Poppe's no-hit bid in game one yesterday.

Jen Daro would make the game interesting as she hit a two-run homerun off Poppe to cut the Villanova lead to 4-2, but Poppe would get Allie Webb to pop up to end the game.

Poppe (16-9) yielded just three hits while striking out five Bluejay batters. For the week, she was 4-0 and compiled an ERA of 0.70 in 30.0 innings pitched. Overall, she struck out 36 batters to raise her season total 152. With the win, Poppe has now become Villanova's all-time leader in complete games with 76.

Herschberg was 2-for-4 on Sunday and 5-for-12 overall in the series with three RBI's and a homerun. Alden went 1-for-1 Sunday with a homerun, a walk, and she was hit-by-a-pitch. For the series, the Ivyland, Pa. native was 5-for-8 with four homeruns, seven RBI's, and four runs scored.

This is Villanova's second longest winning streak in program history. The record is 21 games set back in the 2000-01 season.

Villanova will return to play this coming Wednesday, April 20th as the 'Cats will hit the road to play Rider. Game one starts at 2:30 p.m. with game two to follow at 4:30 p.m.
