  • Villanova advances to the national championship game for the third time in its history and the first time since the program won its only national title in 1985. The other championship game appearance for the Wildcats came in 1971, ironically in Houston. This season marks the fifth time overall that Villanova reached the Final Four. The five appearances came in 1939, 1971, 1985, 2009 and 2016.
  • With the victory, the Wildcats set a school record with their 34th win of the season. Villanova is 34-5 this season and surpassed the previous record of 33 victories which was set just last season. This is the 12th time in school history that the Wildcats have won at least 25 games in a season. The first six such seasons came from 1920-2005, while the last six have all come in the past 10 years.
  • The national semifinal win over Oklahoma set a host of all-time NCAA Tournament and Final Four records, among them the largest margin of victory (44) ever in a Final Four contest and the highest field goal percentage (71.4%, 35-49) in a national semifinal game. There had never been a Final Four game which ended with a scoring margin larger than 36 points. The only Final Four game in which a team shot a higher field goal percentage was a national championship game, and a familiar one. Villanova shot 78.6 percent (22-of-28) in its 66-64 upset of Georgetown in the 1985 national title game.
  • Villanova took control of the game with a 12-0 run in the first half, and never trailed after redshirt freshman guard Mikal Bridges hit a three-pointer with 11:25 left in the period to put the Wildcats in front 19-17 and start the 12-0 spurt.
  • The game was put far out of reach in the second half when Villanova exploded for a 25-0 run. That was actually part of an even larger stretch in which the Wildcats pulled away from a nine-point lead (46-37 with 16:20 remaining) and used a 33-4 run over 8:48 to lead 79-41 with 7:04 to play. It took just 5:18 of clock time for Villanova to score the last 25 points of the run.
  • In the first game played between the Wildcats and Oklahoma this season, Villanova never had the lead at any point in a 78-55 loss. In their Final Four meeting, it took the Wildcats less than 16 minutes to build a 16-point lead (37-21 with 4:07 remaining in the first half). That margin represented the largest deficit the Sooners had faced in any game this season.
  • Villanova is now 56-35 (.615) all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including 19-10 (.655) under head coach Jay Wright. During his Wildcats tenure, Wright has led the program to five of its 17 Sweet 16 appearances, three of its 13 Elite 8 appearances and two of its Final Four berths. Wright will coach in a national championship game on Monday night for the first time in his career.
  • Senior forward Daniel Ochefu scored his 1,000th career point on a jumper with 16:05 left in the first half. He became the 61st player in program history to reach the 1,000 point plateau. Ochefu is one of nine players in school history with at least 1,000 career points and 900 career rebounds, and one of just four with over 1,000 points, 900 rebounds and 100 blocked shots.
  • Junior guard Josh Hart scored a game-high 23 points and moved up four spots on the Wildcats career scoring list. He now has 1,236 career points to rank 43rd in the Villanova record book, 27 points behind Jack Devine (1951-55) with 1,263 points. Hart came into the game against Oklahoma ranked 47th with 1,213 points. He passed Mark Plansky (1,217 from 1984-88), Ricky Wright (1,221 from 1999-03), Hank Siemiontkowski (1,224 from 1969-72) and John Celestand (1,227 from 1995-99) during the game.
