Lawrence Township, N.J. - The Villanova softball team (26-13, 9-3 BIG EAST) has now won 17 straight games following their 6-1 road win in game two over Rider Wednesday.
Villanova took game one Wednesday 3-0 as Kate Poppe pitched her fourth career no-hitter.
It took until the top of the fourth inning for the 'Cats to get on the scoreboard in game two. With two outs and Nikki Alden on second base, Lauren Hanna RBI singled to right center field scoring Alden to give Villanova a 1-0 lead.
After Villanova starter Brette Lawrence set the Broncs down in order in the bottom half of the fourth inning, VU would add an additional run in the top half of the fifth inning.
Sierra McConnell led off the inning with a single. Tianah Hathaway would move her over to second base with a SAC bunt for the first out of the inning. McConnell would then advance to third after Lauren Herschberg flied out to centerfield for the second out of the inning. Delaney Switzer would then reach base after an error by the Rider second baseman which scored McConnell for the 2-0 Villanova lead.
Rider would tack on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning before Villanova answered back with four runs of their own. Dana Morris, Alden, Hanna, and Aleshia Ayers all had RBI's in the inning.
Lawrence improved to 4-4 on the year as she went six innings giving up one run on five hits while striking out two batters.
Hanna was 3-for-3 with two RBI's in the game. Lauren Herschberg's 15-game hitting streak was snapped.
As a team, Villanova had 12 hits and committed zero errors.
Villanova will return to action this weekend as they host the Georgetown Hoyas. Saturday's games will be the Score for the Cure. Sunday will be Youth Day. Game one on Saturday is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. Game two to follow at 2:00 p.m. Sunday's game will begin at 12:00 p.m.
