July 22, 2016

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland - Rising sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) continued her terrific summer season with another personal best in the 1500 meters on Friday morning at the World U20 Championships. In the preliminary heats of the event, Hutchinson crossed the finish line in 4:22.88 at Stadion Zawisza and finished seventh in her heat.

Hutchinson, who ran for her native Canada, is one of two rising sophomores from Villanova competing at this week's World U20 Championships. Teammate Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) will run for the United States in the 5000 meters on Saturday morning.

The race for Hutchinson on Friday morning put an exclamation point on her list of accomplishments since the end of the collegiate season. Hutchinson had recorded her previous personal best in the 1500 meters of 4:23.00 at the Victoria International Track Classic on June 19. Her finish in that meet earned her a selection to the country's squad for the World U20 Championships on July 3.

Hutchinson followed up being named to the Canadian team by finishing second in the Junior Women's 1500 meters at the Canadian Championships and Rio Trials in Edmonton earlier this month. She ranked fourth out of 23 competitors in the preliminaries of the 1500 meters with a time of 4:34.56, then moved up to a second place finish in the final with a nearly identical time of 4:34.48.

Following a successful freshman season, Hutchinson is poised to become one of the Wildcats elite runners going into the 2016-17 academic year. Last season she ran the second leg of the 4x1500 meter relay as Villanova surged to a Championship of America title in the event at the Penn Relays. She also earned All-BIG EAST honors during the outdoor season for being a part of the team's 4x800 meter relay at the BIG EAST Championships.

During the indoor track & field season, Hutchinson came in third in the Mile at the BIG EAST meet to earn all-conference honors, and was also a member of the Wildcats third place 4x800 relay squad which earned All-BIG EAST honors.

In addition to her new personal best of 4:22.88 in the 1500 meters, Hutchinson established new top times in the 1000 meters (2:52.02) and the Mile (4:44.68) during her freshman season as a collegiate runner. She also had a strong cross country season in 2015, when she was the fourth scoring runner for Villanova at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and recorded 38th place overall finishes at both the NCAA regional meet and the BIG EAST Championships.

Burda will compete in the final of the 5000 meters on Saturday at 4:30 am. Eastern time (10:30 local time in Poland). She earned her spot on the United States team after coming in third in the 5000 meters at the USATF Junior Championships in Clovis, Calif. in June.
