Villanova, Pa. -
An early first half goal gave Drexel momentum as they tallied a 3-0 victory over Villanova during a rainy Sunday afternoon matchup.
With the loss, Villanova moves to 1-1 on the season while Drexel improves to 2-0.
The Dragons registered the early score in the 6th minute of play off a corner that was kicked in by Kylie Strong and Shaelyn McCarthy was able to find the ball and put it into the back of the net. Despite the early goal the Wildcats regained composure and held steady on both ends of the field. In the first half Villanova had six shots and four saves.
Coming into the second half, Drexel continued to attack on offense but Emmalee Meyer (Massapequa, N.Y.) made three strong saves to keep Villanova in the game. Just about halfway in the rain started coming down harder and caused challenges for both teams.
With just under twenty minutes remaining in the game Drexel was able to get on the board off another success corner kick that Kiera Hennessy was able to place into the goal. And minutes later Vanessa Kara was able to steal the ball away on a Villanova clear attempt and score an unassisted goal.
"Our team did not compete or play to our standard today and the result is what we deserved. Full credit to Drexel who are a hard-working team that played with passion", stated head coach Fran Kulas. "Every game at this level is a challenge. The next step in the evolution of this team is playing with urgency from the first whistle and I am counting on our team captains to provide the leadership necessary moving forward to ensure that we are consistently playing to the standards of Villanova Women's Soccer."
The Wildcats were led by junior Amanda Vocelka (Atlanta, Ga.) who had two shots on goal for the match while both freshmen Shannon Casey (Shelby Township, Mich.) and Kristin Barbour (Superior, Colo.) had two shots.
Villanova will return to action on Sunday, August 28th when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to take on the Princeton Tigers. Game time is slated for 7 pm and will be broadcasted on ESPNU.
