Villanova/Towson Post-Game Notes

Sept. 17, 2016

Recap | Box Score | Quotes | Photo Gallery

  • Villanova won its conference opener for the fifth straight year and is now 22-7 (.759) all-time in league openers.
  • Villanova recorded its highest point total (40) since scoring 48 points against Albany on November 15, 2014. Dating back to the start of the 2011 season, the Wildcats own a 25-3 (.893) record when they score at least 30 points in a game.
  • Junior safety Rob Rolle set a school record with his 100 yard interception return for a touchdown. The previous Villanova record for an interception return was 96 yards by Chris Yurkow in a game against Holy Cross on November 15, 1980. The longest previous interception return in the Andy Talley era had been 72 yards by Brian Barajas against Richmond on October 26, 1996.
  • There have now been six plays in school history of at least 100 yards. The six plays include a school record 110-yard rush by John Powers against Fordham on October 15, 1902 and four kickoff returns of at least 100 yards (most recently by Willie Sydnor in 1980). College football statistics no longer recognize yardage in the end zone; Rolle was two yards into the end zone when he intercepted the pass that he returned for an official return of 100 yards.

  • Rob Rolle's interception return was the 10th in CAA Football history of 100 yards. The most recent of the previous nine came last season when David Jones of Richmond accomplished the feat in a playoff game against William & Mary on December 5, 2015.
  • Junior wide receiver Taurus Phillips scored the first two touchdowns of his career and also tallied his first career 100-yard receiving game in the process. Phillips hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass for the first Villanova points of the game with 6:53 left in the first quarter, then added a 21-yard touchdown reception with 9:55 remaining in the second quarter. Phillips finished the day with seven receptions for a career-high 110 yards.
  • Prior to the touchdown pass thrown by sophomore quarterback Zach Bednarczyk with 6:53 left in the fourth quarter, Villanova had gone a span of 38 drives and 72 pass attempts covering three-plus games without throwing a touchdown pass. The previous touchdown pass before today's contest was a game-winner in the final minute of play against Richmond last season on November 14, 2015. The stretch without a scoring pass lasted 188:48 of clock time. During that span however, the Wildcats rushed for 781 yards and eight touchdowns in addition to scoring a defensive touchdown.
  • Senior defensive lineman Tanoh Kpassagnon registered the fourth forced fumble and second fumble recovery of his career. He also had a sack to give him 13.0 in his career. Kpassagnon has nine tackles this season, including 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.
