PHILADELPHIA, PA. - After being held scoreless in the first half, Villanova sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn exploded for 23 second half points to lead the Wildcats to a 60-48 road win over the Penn Quakers. With the victory, Villanova improves to 9-9 on the season and 3-1 in Big Five play, while the Quakers fall to 9-5 on the year and 0-3 in City Series action.
Penn led 29-25 with 7:45 remaining in the third quarter when Hahn took over the game. Following a lay-up that made it a 27-25 game, Hahn tallied two free throws, a pull-up jumper and a three from straightaway for nine straight points. The Hahn triple gave Villanova its first lead of the second half at 32-31 with 6:04 to play in the third quarter.
A three by Penn's Kasey Chambers pulled the Quakers within one at 36-35 at the 2:58 mark. On Villanova's next possession, the Wildcats went back up three on a driving lay-up by freshman forward Mary Gedaka. The Quakers would make it a 38-37 game on two free throws by Phoebe Sterba, before Hahn closed out the third quarter scoring on a deep three. The Hahn trifecta gave Villanova a 41-37 advantage after three.
The Wildcats started the fourth quarter on a 12-1 run to take control of the game at 53-38 with 4:36 to play. Hahn started the run with a three, before junior center Megan Quinn buried a triple of her own from the corner to give the Wildcats a double digit lead at 47-37. After Penn's Sydney Stipanovich made one of two from the foul line to make it a 47-38 game, Villanova scored six in a row with Gedaka, and Hahn connecting on short jumpers and junior guard Alex Louin scoring on a lay-up off a nice feed by Quinn.
Penn would not get within nine after the decisive Wildcat run and Villanova would tally its 14th straight win over the Quakers.
Villanova raced to a 6-0 lead on back-to-back three-point field goals by junior center Megan Quinn and junior guard Alex Louin. Penn answered with the next five points of the game on a three by Anna Ross and a lay-up by Sydney Stipanovich.
The Wildcats led 11-10 with 2:09 left in the opening quarter when Villanova redshirt freshman Grace Stant connected on a three from the right wing to increase her team's lead to 14-10. Following the Grace triple, Penn scored the last five points of the quarter to take a 15-14 lead after one.
Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter with Villanova and Penn combining for just 17 points. The Quakers led 21-17 with 2:05 to play before intermission when the Wildcats outscored Penn, 6-2, to send the game to halftime tied at 23-23. Quinn accounted for all six Villanova points by connecting on two three-balls.
In the win, Hahn scored a game-high 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range and a 6-of-6 effort from the foul line. She also added three rebounds and three steals. Quinn had a strong game for Villanova with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including a 4-of-7 effort from three-point range.
Penn was paced by Anna Ross with 12 points and Stipanovich who had 11 points to go with seven rebounds.
For the game, Villanova was 21-of-55 from the field (38.2%), 10-of-24 from three-point range (41.7%) and 8-of-9 from the foul line (88.9%), while the Quakers shot 40.5 percent from the floor (17-of-42), 31.3 percent from long distance (5-of-16) and 56.3 percent from the charity stripe (9-of-16). Villanova owned a 36-28 advantage on the backboards. Villanova was charged with just eight turnovers.
Villanova returns to action on Friday, Jan. 20, when the Wildcats travel to Butler for a Big East Conference contest. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
