VILLANOVA, PA. - The Villanova Wildcats led wire to wire and tallied a 71-50 win over the visiting Georgetown Hoyas. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in Big East play, while Georgetown falls to 8-5 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
Villanova led 6-5 when the Wildcats scored eight straight points to take a 14-5 advantage early in the second quarter. After sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn and sophomore forward Jannah Tucker drained back-to-back threes, junior guard Alex Louin scored on a driving lay-up. Tucker pushed the Villanova lead to double digits at 16-6 by converting a left handed lay-up with 8:54 on the clock.
The Wildcats had a 27-19 advantage with 2:15 remaining in the first half when Hahn drained a triple to increase the Villanova lead to 30-19. Georgetown responded with four straight points, before freshman guard Kelly Jekot buried a three-ball and then finished the half scoring on a running lay-up to beat the halftime buzzer. Jekot's lay-up gave Villanova a 35-23 halftime lead.
Villanova put the game away with a 12-4 run midway through the third quarter. Louin gave the Wildcats a 42-27 advantage at the 7:03 mark, before Georgetown's Cynthia Petke scored on a short jumper to pull the Hoyas within 13 at 42-29. After each team failed to score on its next possession, Hahn drained a triple and Villanova led 45-29.
Senior forward Samantha Wilkes scored on consecutive lay-ups to increase the Villanova advantage to 49-31 with 4:15 remaining in the third quarter. Jekot gave the Wildcats a 20 point lead at 51-31 at the 3:25 mark when she drained a pull-up jump shot just inside the foul line.
Georgetown would not get within 18 in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats cruised to the victory.
In the win, Hahn led four Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including a 5-of-11 effort from beyond the arc. Tucker finished with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while junior center Megan Quinn had 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Jekot tallied 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Georgetown was paced by White who had 18 points and five steals and Dorothy Adomako who registered 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
For the game, Villanova was 27-of-57 from the field (47.4%), 12-of-27 from three-point range (44.4%) and 5-of-5 from the foul line (100.0%), while the Hoyas shot 32.1 percent from the floor (18-of-56), 46.2 percent from long distance (6-of-13) and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe (8-of-13). Georgetown owned a 35-34 advantage on the backboards.
Villanova returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 8, when the Wildcats travel to Providence. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
