In women's basketball action on Friday, Feb. 10, the Villanova Wildcats traveled to New York where they tallied a 66-56 win over the St. John's Red Storm. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 13-11 overall and 8-5 in Big East play, while St. John's falls to 16-9 overall and 8-6 in conference action.
With the score tied at 12-12, the Wildcats finished the opening quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 20-14 lead. After sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn and junior guard Alex Louin hit back-to-back threes, Louin closed the first quarter scoring for the Wildcats by going two-for-two from the foul line. Hahn was sensational in the first quarter shooting a perfect four-of-four from the field and three-of-three from long distance for 11 points.
Villanova held a 31-25 lead with 2:54 remaining in the second quarter when the Wildcats closed the half on an 11-4 run to go to halftime with a 42-29 advantage. Sophomore forward Jannah Tucker started the spurt with a conventional three-point play. Junior center Megan Quinn then buried a three-ball to push the lead to double figures at 37-27. Following a bucket by St. John's forward Jade Walker at the 1:26 mark, Louin put Villanova back-up 10 with two free throws. After a defensive stop, Villanova had the ball with the shot clock off. The Wildcats held for the last shot and freshman guard Kelly Jekot drained a three from straightaway to give Villanova a 42-29 lead at the half.
St. John's grabbed the early momentum in the third quarter and used an 8-2 run to slice the Wildcat advantage to 44-37. Villanova quickly called timeout to slow the Red Storm charge.
After neither team was able to score for the next 2:05, Quinn broke the scoring drought with a three from the right wing. The Quinn triple put the Wildcats up 47-37 with 5:13 to play in the third quarter. Villanova used the Quinn basket to propel them on a 12-0 run to end the quarter and take a commanding 56-37 lead after three. The other nine Villanova points included another three by Quinn, a three by Tucker, a lay-up by Jekot and a free throw by redshirt freshman Grace Stant.
Villanova's third quarter defense was outstanding, as the Wildcats held the Red Storm to 3-of-15 shooting for 20.0 percent. St. John's was also just 1-of-4 from the foul line in the third stanza.
Despite shooting just 1-of-10 from the field in the fourth quarter, Villanova's lead never got less than eight points. The Wildcats went 7-of-9 from the foul line in the game's final minute to seal the win.
Hahn led the Wildcats in the victory with 17 points, a career-high eight rebounds and a career-high tying four steals. She was 6-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 2-of-3 from the foul line. Louin finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-high tying six assists, while Tucker finished with 11 points. Quinn and Jekot had nine points off the bench.
St. John's was paced by Akina Wellere with 16 points and Maya Singleton who had a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.
For the game, Villanova was 20-of-48 from the field (41.7%), 10-of-24 from three-point range (41.7%) and 16-of-20 from the foul line (80.0%), while St. John's shot 36.4 percent from the floor (24-of-66), 25.0 percent from long distance (2-of-8) and 54.5 percent from the charity stripe (6-of-11). The Red Storm owned a 44-32 advantage on the backboards.
Villanova returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 12, with a game at Seton Hall. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
