VILLANOVA, PA. - In women's basketball action on Friday evening, the Villanova Wildcats tallied a thrilling 76-71 double overtime win over the visiting Xavier Musketeers. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 15-11 overall and 10-5 in Big East play, while Xavier falls to 11-15 overall and 3-12 in conference action.
With the game tied at 53-53 with 57 seconds to play in regulation, Musketeer senior guard Raeshaun Gaffney gave her team a two point lead on a driving lay-up. After a missed three by Wildcat sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn, the Wildcats were forced to foul Marquia Turner with 30 seconds remaining. Turner made one of two to give Xavier a 56-53 advantage.
On Villanova's next possession, the Wildcats missed three shots before Hahn buried a three to tie the game at 56-56 with 12 seconds to play. The Musketeers raced the ball up the court looking for the game winning bucket, but Turner was called for an offensive foul with eight seconds on the clock. The Wildcats had a good look to win it, but Louin's 15 foot jumper would not fall.
A jumper by Hahn gave Villanova a 63-62 lead at the 1:17 mark of the first overtime. The lead would be short lived, as Xavier would take a 64-63 advantage on two Maddison Blackwell free throws with 53 seconds remaining. Villanova got a good look at a three the next time down the court, but Samantha Wilkes triple would not fall.
Xavier held a 64-63 lead with seven seconds to go and possession of the ball under its own hoop. The Musketeers in bounded the ball to Gaffney who was immediately fouled. After making the first, Gaffney missed the second. With her team out of timeouts, Louin grabbed the rebound and raced the ball up the court where she scored on a lay-up with 1.9 seconds to play.
After taking a timeout and advancing the ball to the front court, Blackwell got a good look at a game-winning basket, but the shot rolled out and the game was sent to a double overtime.
Musketeer sophomore forward Imani Partlow gave Xavier the first lead of double overtime at 67-65 when she scored on a post move in the paint. Villanova responded on the next possession when Hahn drained a three to give the Wildcats a 68-67 advantage. The Wildcats would use Hahn three to propel them on an 8-0 run to take a 73-67 lead with 59 seconds remaining.
Xavier would cut the lead to 73-69 on a lay-up by Leah Schaefer at the 43 second mark. That would be as close as the Musketeers would get as Hahn went three of four from the stripe to seal the win.
Hahn was dominant in double overtime scoring all 11 Wildcat points. She was 2-of-3 from long distance and 2-of-2 from the free throw line in the second overtime.
In the win, Hahn scored a career-high 33 points on 10-of-21 shooting, a 7-of-14 effort from three-point range and a 6-of-8 performance from the line. Louin and junior center Megan Quinn both had double-doubles, with Louin registering 18 points and a career-high 11 rebounds and Quinn posting 13 points and 10 boards. Wilkes finished with five points and 10 caroms.
Xavier was paced by Gaffney with 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Turner and Kindell Fincher had 14 points each.
For the game, Villanova was 25-of-73 from the field (34.2%), 15-of-44 from three-point range (34.1%) and 11-of-13 from the foul line (84.6%), while Xavier shot 43.9 percent from the floor (29-of-66), 45.5 percent from long distance (5-of-11) and 50.0 percent from the charity stripe (8-of-16). Xavier owned a slight 46-44 advantage on the backboards. The Wildcats were charged with just five turnovers in the game.
Villanova returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 19, when the Wildcats play host to the Butler Bulldogs on Senior Day. Tip-off at The Pavilion is set for 1 p.m.
