The Villanova Wildcats traveled to Chicago, Ill., on Friday evening where they saw their five game winning streak come to an end with a 77-50 loss to the No. 19 DePaul Blue Demons. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 16-12 overall and 11-6 in Big East play, while DePaul improves to 23-6 overall and 15-2 in league action.
After DePaul led 20-13 after one quarter of play, the Wildcats scored the first five points of the second quarter to slice the Blue Demon lead to 20-18. Freshman forward Mary Gedaka scored all five points for the Wildcats on a driving lay-up and a conventional three-point play.
DePaul senior guard Brooke Schulte connected on a three-ball and Jacqui Grant scored on a 10-foot jumper to put the Blue Demons up 25-18 with 7:41 remaining in the second quarter. Following a scoreless streak that lasted 2:07, Wildcat junior center Megan Quinn scored on a running hook shot and Villanova trailed 25-20.
Leading 25-20 with 4:55 remaining in the second quarter, the Blue Demons finished the half on a 16-2 run to take a 41-22 lead at halftime. Freshman forward Chante Stonewall led the DePaul run scoring nine of her team's 16 points. Stonewall's nine points included a three, a lay-up, a pull-up jumper and two free throws.
DePaul put the game away midway through the third quarter when the Blue Demons went on a 12-0 run to open up a commanding 57-27 lead at the 3:44 mark. Five different Blue Demons scored in the decisive spurt.
In the loss, Gedaka led the way for the Wildcats with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. She was 4-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from the foul line. Freshman Kelly Jekot and sophomore Adrianna Hahn had seven points each.
DePaul was paced by Schulte with 17 points and senior guard Jessica January who had 13 points. Grant and Stonewall added 10 points apiece.
For the game, Villanova was 17-of-57 from the field (29.8%), 5-of-23 from three-point range (21.7%) and 11-of-13 from the foul line (84.6%), while DePaul shot 47.5 percent from the floor (29-of-61), 45.0 percent from long distance (9-of-20) and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe (10-of-12). DePaul owned a 44-29 advantage on the backboards.
Villanova will close out the 2016-17 regular season on Sunday, Feb. 26, with a game at Marquette. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. central time.
