The Villanova Wildcats concluded the 2016-17 regular season on Sunday afternoon with a loss to the Marquette Golden Eagles. With the loss, Villanova drops to 16-13 overall and 11-7 in Big East play, while Marquette improves to 22-7 overall and 13-6 in conference action.
Villanova will be the four seed in next week's Big East Tournament and will take on five seed St. John's on Sunday, March 5, at 9:30 p.m. eastern time. The tournament will be held at the Al McGuire Center on the campus of Marquette University.
The Golden Eagles led 22-16 after one quarter of play and started the second quarter on a 12-4 run to open up a 32-20 advantage. Two Alex Louin three-pointers made it a 34-26 game, before Marquette's Danielle King drained a triple to give the Golden Eagles a 37-26 lead at halftime.
Villanova started the third quarter on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 41-41 at the 3:31 mark. Louin and sophomore forward Jannah Tucker had five points each in the spurt.
After the Wildcats tied the game, Marquette answered with seven straight points to take a 48-41 lead at the end of three quarters. Amani Wilborn led the Golden Eagle charge with five points on a three and a driving lay-up.
Quinn started the fourth quarter scoring by draining a triple to slice the Marquette lead to 48-44. Marquette then responded with a free throw by Allazia Blockton and a lay-up by King to increase its lead to 51-44 at the 7:13 mark.
Following a scoreless drought if 1:51, Tucker made it a 51-46 game by scoring on a lay-up on an out of bounds play with 5:22 to play.
The Wildcats trailed 55-46 with 3:28 on the clock when sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn buried a three to pull the Wildcats within six at 55-49. On the next trip down the court, Blockton scored on a short jumper to increase her team's lead to 57-49. Following a missed shot by Hahn, the Golden Eagles put the game away on a lay-up by Erika Davenport. The Davenport bucket gave Marquette a 59-49 point advantage with 2:25 to go.
In the loss, Louin and Tucker led the Wildcats with 17 points each. Louin also pulled down seven rebounds. Quinn led the Wildcats on the boards with eight caroms.
Marquette was paced by Blockton with 16 points, while King had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
For the game, Villanova was 21-of-70 from the field (30.0%), 8-of-39 from three-point range (20.5%) and 3-of-5 from the foul line (60.0%), while Marquette shot 40.6 percent from the floor (26-of-64), 26.7 percent from long distance (4-of-15) and 75.0 percent from the charity stripe (6-of-8). Marquette owned a slim 44-43 advantage on the backboards.
