VILLANOVA, PA. - In women's basketball action on Friday, Feb. 3, the Villanova Wildcats lost a hard fought defensive battle to the Creighton Bluejays by a score of 47-44. With the setback, Villanova falls to 11-11 overall and 6-5 in Big East play, while Creighton improves to 16-6 overall and 10-2 in league action.
A lay-up by freshman guard Kelly Jekot cut the Creighton lead to 44-39 with 3:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. On the Bluejays next possession, senior guard Marissa Janning put her team back up seven when she scored on a running lay-up.
Following the Janning basket, neither team was able to score for the next 2:36. Creighton ended the scoring drought when Audrey Faber went one of two from the foul line to give the Bluejays a 47-39 advantage with 30 seconds remaining.
On Villanova's next trip down the court, sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn drained a three to cut the Creighton lead to 47-42 with 18 seconds to play. The Wildcats immediately fouled Bluejay guard Lauren Works who missed both foul shots. Villanova then called timeout and ran a play to isolate junior guard Alex Louin for a drive to the basket. Louin was fouled on the drive and converted both foul shots to make it a one possession game at 47-44 with eight seconds remaining.
The Wildcats then forced a Creighton turnover on a steal by senior forward Jordan Dillard. Dillard passed to Jekot who swung the ball to Janah Tucker who misfired on the game-tying three at the buzzer.
Creighton started the game slow, shooting just 1-of-15 from the field, including a 0-of-10 effort from three-point range in the opening quarter. The Wildcats took advantage of Creighton's shooting woes to lead 7-2 after one quarter. Villanova's seven first quarter points, included a three by Louin and baskets by Hahn and senior forward Samantha Wilkes.
The Bluejays got on track in the second quarter and used a 10-3 run to take their first lead of the game at 10-9 with 5:20 to play in the second stanza. Creighton outscored Villanova, 7-3, over the last 1:29 of the second quarter to take a 24-17 lead at halftime.
Hahn led the Wildcats in the loss with a game-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range. Louin finished with seven points and a game-best 10 rebounds.
Creighton was paced by Faber with 14 points. She was the only Bluejay in double figures.
For the game, Villanova shot 29.6 percent from the field (16-of-54), 29.4 percent from three-point range (5-of-17) and 87.5 percent from the foul line (7-of-8), while Creighton was 17-of-53 from the floor (32.1%), 5-of-23 from long distance (21.7%) and 8-of-14 from the charity stripe (57.1%). The Bluejays owned a 42-35 advantage on the backboards.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Feb. 5, when Villanova plays host to the Providence Friars. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
