The Villanova women's basketball lost to the St. John's in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Tournament on Sunday night by a score of 56-40. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 16-14 on the season, while St. John's improves to 20-10 on the season.
Villanova finished the second quarter on an 8-2 run to send the game to halftime tied at 23-23. Freshman forward Mary Gedaka led the Wildcats charge with four of Villanova's eight points. The Wildcat defense sparked the second quarter spurt, as Villanova held St. John's to seven second quarter points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field.
The Red Storm started the third quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 36-25 lead with 3:35 remaining in the quarter. St. John's senior point guard Aaliyah Lewis led the charge with six of her team's 13 points.
St. John's would go take a 44-29 lead into the fourth quarter. Villanova struggled offensively in the third stanza shooting just 25 percent from the field on a 3-of-12 effort from the floor.
The Red Storm would put the game away early in the fourth quarter as they used a 7-2 spurt over the first five minutes of the final period to take a 51-31 advantage at the 5:16 mark.
In the loss, Gedaka led the Wildcats with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. She also pulled-down a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Alex Louin added seven points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
St. John's was paced by Lewis who had 27 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Akina Wellere also reached double figures with 11 points.
For the game, Villanova was 16-of-51 from the field (31.4%), 3-of-22 from three-point range (13.6%) and 5-of-5 from the foul line (100.0%), while St. John's shot 41.7 percent from the floor (16-of-51), 55.6 percent from behind the arc (5-of-9) and 64.7 percent from the charity stripe (11-of-17). The Red Storm owned a 35-28 advantage on the backboards.
