Villanova/Stony Brook Post-Game Notes

Stony Brook 29, Villanova 27

TEAM NOTES
  • Villanova fell to 48-45 (.516) as an FCS member in games where both the Wildcats and their opponent are nationally-ranked.  After the loss to Stony Brook, the Wildcats are 59-73 (.447) overall against ranked teams since becoming an FCS member in 1985.

OFFENSE
  • Senior quarterback Zach Bednarczyk left Saturday's game early due to an injury but still was able to move up one spot on the Wildcats list of all-time passing leaders.  Bednarczyk passed Tom Colombo (1989-92) and moved into sixth place in school history with 5,941 yards.  He is 300 yards behind Chris Whitney (2007-10), who threw for 6,241 yards.  Bednarczyk was 15-of-23 for 180 yards and a touchdown against the Seawolves before being injured.

  • Despite playing without senior tight end Ryan Bell who was injured against Towson in Week 3, the Wildcats nevertheless got significant production from their tight ends in the Stony Brook game.  Junior Simon Bingelis led the team with a career-high six receptions for a total of 40 yards, while sophomore Todd Summers established career highs with five receptions and a team-high 77 yards.  Summers opened the scoring on a five-yard touchdown reception – the third of his career – midway through the first quarter.  Through the first five games of the season, the trio of Bell, Bingelis and Summers has combined for 38 receptions, 415 yards and five scores.

  • Senior slot receiver Jarrett McClenton caught a 25-yard touchdown pass with 56 seconds remaining as the Wildcats tried to rally from an eight-point deficit.  McClenton is tied for the CAA Football lead with five receiving touchdowns on the year, and he leads Villanova with 22 receptions for 388 yards (17.6 yards per reception).  He has scored in four of the Wildcats first five games.

DEFENSE
  • Senior safety Rob Rolle had 10 total tackles against the Seawolves to notch the third double-digit game of his career and the second in a span of three weeks.  He previously tied a career high with 11 stops against Towson in Week 3.  Rolle now has 29 tackles on the season, including 19 solo stops and 10 assisted tackles, to go along with a fumble recovery and two pass breakups.

  • Stony Brook rushed for 161 yards on 47 carries against the Villanova defense in a rare occasion where a Wildcats opponent has gone over 100 yards on the ground.  Villanova has held 28 of its last 65 opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards, with 13 of those opponents rushing for fewer than 50 yards.
