Villanova/Stony Brook Post-Game Quotes

Stony Brook 29, Villanova 27

Villanova head coach Mark Ferrante

Opening statement: Well the outcome of the game almost went as anticipated. We knew it was going to be a closely fought contest. It was going to be a lot of back and forth. I didn't anticipate the way it actually happened. It was almost a tale of two halves. We were making some plays in the first half and we took a 21-6 lead into halftime. They were just missing some plays and then in the second half they made the plays. If you look at the two halves we had 21-6 at halftime and they ended up scoring 23-6 in the second half. You do the math that gives them the plus two advantage with the outcome of the game. Typical CAA hard fought contest. Very physical. You know what we anticipated going in was happening. Unfortunately they made more plays and just enough plays to control the clock in the second half and get more points on the board and come out with a victory. So typical CAA game, fast physical and we just came up a two-point conversion short of taking it to overtime.

On the injured players: Well it seems like each week we get another guy banged up because this league is so physical. But the health of our team is pretty good right now. Zach Bednarczyk was not able to finish the Stony Brook game unfortunately but we are getting that looked at today and they did take a good close look at him at halftime this past week because it did happen in the first half. It didn't look like there was any structural damage or anything like that so we are excited about that. Everyone else seems to be coming back.  Rob Rolle who missed the week before played this past week and led our team in tackles. Our center (Paul) Grattan who missed the week before was back on the field, played the full game. You know some of the guys that we had some bumps and bruises on looked like they were able to come back and do pretty well. So the only guy we are still waiting on is Ryan Bell who might get cleared pretty soon but I don't know if he is going to be active this week. But other than that it is a wait and see. We have a couple guys that got rolled up on this past week and we'll see but I think they all be ready for practice tomorrow and Wednesday.

On the major takeaway from the game: We just have to be as consistent as we possibly can. Coming off of these fast starts we just have to be able to sustain it and maintain it. Unfortunately we were able to get off the field on third down and continued our drives on third down on offense and get off the field on defense in the first half. Then in the second half it kind of went the other way on us. So we got to focus in on that. Try to get the stops on third down when we have a chance to. Then convert on third down on the other side of the ball. Then we've got to hold onto the football and do a better job on our special teams. You know having a fumble on the opening kickoff in the second half really allowed them to have the short field and get a score there and get momentum. Then we missed another field goal. You know if we had made that field goal who knows the outcome could have been different. The game could've gone a whole different direction because that field goal miss was earlier in the game, it was in the first half. But when you lose by two and you have a chance to make three that ends up being a little sore spot so we've got to just improve our special teams and like I said do better on third down moving forward.
