VILLANOVA, Pa. – The men's and women's swimming and diving team opened the 2018-19 season with a home meet against West Virginia. The captured a close contest, defeating the Mountaineers 154-146 and the men were defeated by WV, 236-64.
Women's Swimming
The Wildcats had great showings from many different women. The Villanova women closed out the competition with six first place finishes on the day.
Nicole Welch ended the day with two first-place finishes. In the 1000-yard freestyle she recorded a time of 10:15.71 and in the 500-yard freestyle she recorded a time of 5:00.70.
Darby Goodwin finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.51, 1.54 seconds faster than West Virginia's second place finisher. She also notched a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke while two other Wildcats finished in third and fourth. Goodwin recorded a final time of 2:01.84, in third,
Grace Wielar recorded a time of 2:04.18 and
Anastasia Kontrimas finished in fourth with a 2:05.94 finish.
In the 100-yard freestyle Villanova finished with the top three finishes.
Taylor Wilson led the pack first with a time of 51.57, Millie Routledge came in second with a time of 51.70 and
Alexa Fabbri was third with a time of 52.04. Routledge earned another second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle recording a time of 1:52.33.
On the day, Villanova was notorious for placing in third and fourth. In the 200-yard breaststroke
Elise Pidutti,
Rayann Jaryszak and
Samantha Cheruk finished in second, third and fourth. Pidutti touched the wall in 2:24.92, following behind was Jaryszak with a time of 2:27.14 and Cheruk at 2:28.99.
Emily Provenzo placed third in the 500 free with at 5:05.12 and
Andrea Fong closed out the Wildcat pack at fourth with a time of 5:10.00.
Villanova also finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:25.65.
Abbey Berloco, Wilson, Fabbri and Routledge competed in the 400-freestyle relay. Wilson had an impressive split time of 50.2 which helped lock in the victory also while breaking the Pavilion Pool Record. Fabbri also earned a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.75, only .30 seconds behind Julia Nilton of West Virginia.
Men's Swimming
The day did not fare as well for the men as it did the women. In the men's defeat, they finished with two first place finishes and a second-place finish.
Stephen Krecsmar was the first to notch a first-place finish for the men. In the 50-yard free he recorded a time of 20.79.
Justin Cucchi was next to earn a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with 1:51.51 as a final time.
Andrew Kelley finished fourth in the 200 back with a time of 1:54.54 but also secured the only second place finish on the day in the 100-yard backstroke. Kelley finished second with a time of 51.02 just behind Angelo Russo from WV who finished first with a recorded time of 49.81.
In both the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay the Wildcats earned a third-place finish. In the 400-yard free, Krecsmar, Kelley,
Jackson Kabas and
Nick Spina recorded a time of 3:10.66 for third. Kelley,
JJ Strain,
Jesse Marsh and Krecsmar finished the 200-yard medley in 1.33.66.
The men's and women's teams will be back in action Sat. Nov. 3 when they travel to Georgetown University for a 1 p.m. meet.
