Wildcats Fall to No. 5 Georgetown in Overtime, 1-0

Washington, D.C.- The Villanova Wildcats (9-5, 3-2 BIG EAST) fought hard against the No. 5 Georgetown Hoyas (12-0-2, 5-0 BIG EAST) but fell in overtime by a final of 1-0.

It took till the 98th minute for the Hoyas to find the back of the net for what would be the game winner.  Kyra Carusa set up Caitlin Farrell who shot the ball from six yards out on the right side of the box.  The golden goal was Georgetown's second shot in overtime.

"This one was a tough one to swallow," said head coach Chris McLain.  "Gutted because the players left every on the field. They knew playing a Top 5 team in the country, they had to follow the game plan. They did just that, and some more."

The Wildcats dominated possession time to start the game.  Chloe O'Neill took two quick shots on goal that were saved by Arielle Schechtman and the Wildcats were awarded two corner kicks.  Ciara Terabasso took the other shot on goal for Villanova in the first half while freshman keeper Hensley Hancuff had five saves.

Bri Austin and Ida DiClemente gave the Wildcats two shots on goal in the second half and Hancuff had two saves in the second 45.  Georgetown pushed in the final minutes of the second half taking a total of five shots and three corner kicks.  The Wildcats defense was able to come up with big plays and stop the Hoyas from scoring in regulation.

In overtime the Wildcats came out strong once again with Connor Huggins placing a shot on goal off a Niki Molina corner kick but Schechtman was able to get the save.  Villanova would be awarded another corner kick but the Hoyas would take the ball down field and then set themselves up for the game winner in the 98th minute.

"We felt like we could of come home with at least one point, but without question we grew as a team today. We will take a day or two off, regroup and get ourselves ready for Creighton at home. Proud of this team, they wore the Badge with honor today. They would of made every player that played before them proud," continued McLain.

The Wildcats will return to action next Sunday at home when the Creighton Blue Jays come to Higgins Soccer Complex.  Game time is set for 1:00 P.M.
