LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Villanova Field Hockey team concluded its 2018 season this Friday, Nov. 2 after falling to the University of Connecticut 9-1 in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals. The Wildcats finished the season 9-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Huskies will go on to the championship round and face No. 2 seed Liberty on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
UConn wasted no time to put a point on the board and get the game going in its favor. Svea Boker scored the first goal for the Huskies four minutes into play, she also later scored the eighth goal of the contest. Abby Gooderham was the next goal scorer for UConn making the score 2-0 with 12 minutes gone in the game. Gooderham was another player who scored two goals on the day.
Cecile Pieper, Maddy Wray, Amanda Collins and Jessica Dembrowski were the other Huskies to put points on the board throughout the contest. Wray was the final individual who scored two goals in the contest. Dembrowski rounded out the scoring for UConn making the score 9-0 at 58:58.
The Huskies would have earned their way to a shutout victory if it had not been for
Abby Siana, this week's BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Siana netted one in after receiving a pass from
Lydia Sydnor, making the final score 9-1. The goal came after a corner opportunity that was inserted by
Allison Sayia, stopped by
Kiwi Comizio and passed off to Sydnor.
On the afternoon, Siana fired off three of the five shots that were taken by the Wildcats.
Megan Vermeil and Sydnor each followed with one a piece. The 'Cats were outshot by the Huskies 19-5 and led in corners 8-3. In the net,
Erika Miller recorded five saves while
Christen Pennington grabbed a defensive save. Miller finished the season with 103 saves for a total of 450 in her career.
Vermeil and Sydnor finished the season leading in points and goals. Both junior forwards scored eight goals and tallied four assists for 20 points. Siana followed behind with seven goals and three assists for 17 points.
Villanova ended the season with four All-BIG EAST Second Team member which included sophomore
Riley Dolan, juniors
Megan Vermeil and
Christen Pennington and senior
Erika Miller.
